Ripping them manually takes a bit of involvement, but you get excelent rips and it's not all that hard..
www.flexion.org has a great guide.
Basically, use SmartRipper to copy the .VOB's to your Hard Drive.. Use DVD2AVI to create a .d2v file for the movie and also create a PCM wave file for it. Then use RazorLame to convert the WAV to MP3.
Next up, open the .d2v file in the VFAPI converter (which makes a .avi linked file)...
Open the .mp3 in WaveMP3 to add a RIFF header.. Now open the .avi and .wav you just made in VirtualDub, select your DivX codec, throw in a Teleside filter, Resize the picture, and you're done :)
I know it sounds difficult, but the guide will walk you though step by step and provide you w/ screenshots and software needed. Takes me about 20 minutes actually clicking things to do it.. the rest of the time I'm in the living room watching TV waiting on it to finish.. Can do a rip in about 14 hours on my 1ghz Tbird w/ 16x Pioneer DVD.

I honestly havent done one yet so I dont know if its easier or harder than JB's method.
Figured I could give ya some options.
