Then feel sorry for moi. I'm on dial up and aol:cryol:

In UK, unless cable's in your area (not in mine yet) AOL and BT are the only companies offering unmetered calls for a flat monthly fee. And I'm reliably informed by other forum members that BT is, uh, shit.

Flops, the few times I've used aol wasn't a bad experience at all, just here the monthly fee is outragous and access is unreliable at best, not to mention the changes made to your system upon installation. I'm in the same boat though, my area isn't due for cable until sometime 2003 from what my telco service tells me
:D BTW, are you using UDmon?

Rando:

Using AOL is no worse than the others I've tried, but I must confess I don't like the way it stomps all over your OS. When I eventually change, I reckon it'll be time for a format c:

I do have trouble reading some sites though, sometimes get script errors, and I can't read the articles on the main page at ForumOC as they're using php instead of HTML. Or something

I was going to try try using another browser, haven't got round to it yet, and I'm not even sure if I can with AOL.

The UD Monitor? I have it installed, loaded up three proteins to run, but it didn't work. After the first one completed, it wanted to connect to the server. I've been lazy, I'll have to take a closer look at it.

Thanks for reply :)

FBS,

Well, can't you log on to AOL, minimize, and launch IE? That's what my buddies does.

To keep IE from auto connecting after completing a unit, in IE go to tools/options/connections, and tick "never dial a connection" that should solve the problem:D

Heehee, I got my own personal help team online - magic :D

Sometimes my naivety frightens me...:hhead: Or is it just laziness?

Whatever - thanks for all the help guys :D

Now all I gotta do is load up the latest version of IE I can find 'cos I actually deleted all references to it, although I know it's probably lurking there somewhere. Now, let's take a look through all them magazine CD's....

BTW, UD server is busy lately... sometimes having to wait half an hour or so before it gets through - anybody else?

It will still be there Flopps, AOHELL actually uses IE to do its work ... just does it via a back door.

You only need 3 things to use IE
1. The phone number
2. your user name/login name
3. your password

What the heck AOHELL does with your email is another matter. If you have a POP3 account with them then you will only need the "POP3 Address" and the "SMTP Address" to go with the other 3 bits of information.

Therefore, you can "ADD" any account to IE with just 5 bit of information and only the above 3 to get access to the Internet.

This advice is FREE

I'm just curious as to how many ways you can use to log on to AOL server. I connect to my school and lab servers using the old dial-up from home using one or two numbers. I do believe AOL gives you a list of local numbers, though when you dial-up AOL, it'll randomly chooses the lease busy server (or so they say). Well, can you pick a number from that list, and dial in using the old dial-up method, thus by passing all the AOL crap?

Thanks Mucks :)

AmStoned:

The way AOL is set up with me for phone numbers is that they supply a list of around 12 numbers. From that list you can choose as many as you like and in what order you'd like the service to dial them. Funnily enough I've found that selecting 'Dial last' mostly gets me through first time, even in peak periods, whereas a lot of the other numbers are sometimes engaged.

AOL = 'Assholes Of London'? :)

FBS: Let me tell the story again. Okay, we all hate AOL and the freaking "You Got Mail" control deck. So, what I'm saying is, if you use the list of local numbers to create your old dial-up, you can by pass the damn AOL control deck. Here are a couple sample pictures.

A shot of your individual dial-up property. Just enter one of your local numbers and dial away.

OK, thanks :)

I've loaded IE 5.5, now when I click on it AOL dials up and opens on it's Home page. I just minimise that and there is IE in all it's glory.

WTF have I mean missing? I'm getting no scripting errors and I'm opening pages now that were inaccesable before. Tres bon! :)

Mucks: Think I'll leave the e-mail service as it is for now, that bit of AOL actually works OK. When I eventually, if ever, get cable, I'll format my HDD and start again I think.

Time to try Opera? Heehee... :D
