I had heard rumblings about this a while back but finally found a few solid bits of information about it, including the full text of the proposed piece of legislation.
This should scare the hell out of any free thinking individual. The mere thought that we would give some much authority to any one organization is scary.
It would appear that there is a Senator from S. Carolina who feels that he knows more about the technologies that drive the world to day than the combined giants of Intel, Microsoft and AMD among others. He has proposed and is working on Legislation that would make any Digitial device mandatorily comply with Federal Standards.
Here are a few of the articles I have gathered as well as the text of the bill. I have also included the link to the Anandtech forums that discusses this bit of government ruination of our lives.

Text of the proposed SSSCA legislation (http://cryptome.org/sssca.htm )

Anandtech forum discussing this. some interesting links and views on the matter (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=728226&STARTPAGE=1 )
We all owe it to ourselves and to the others in our community to not let our government pass this in any form. This not only affects the United States but to the rest of the world as the US is the leader in technology and this would kill that leadership.
Write, call, email, send smoke signals, vote but dont ignore this one.
