I was working on my laptop and saved a paper I was working on. Disconnected the laptop and when I plugged it back in, it wouldn't boot. It sounds like the HD is going. Is there any way to get into the system without loading windows? It hangs at the splash screen.
Thanx and hurry :cryol:

Well you'll need a boot disk so that you can get to the command prompt. You should be able to access the file from there.
I assume you've tried getting into safe mode first. One other thing to try is to get to the command prompt from the boot menu after pressing F8 (i.e. same as trying to get to safe mode).
Another option is to get a Laptop HD adaptor. Take the HD out of the lappy and put it into a desktop machine. You'll be able to browse the HD from the desktop machine that way.
A DOS 7 bootdisk will let you access FAT16/FAT32.
You will need something special like NTFSDOS from www.sysinternals.com to read NTFS in DOS mode.
I have been working on setting up a boot disk for ya but I can't seem to fit all the files in the 1.44MB limit DUH!
I gonna keep trying to do something, it will be usefull to have around anyway.
Ok I done it. Not as good as I originally intended but it does allow read access to NTFS from DOS.
The ZIP file is 345KB so I can't attach it here.
PM with your email address and I will send it over.

Well I was going nuts and decided to download Dell's drive test. It checked the hard drive out and said it was ok. I wasn't happy with that and went to IBM's site and downloaded the Drive Fitness Test and ran it.
It found a bad sector and repaired it. I rebooted and I'm now back in windows :D
So all is good for now. But I know what's to come once a hd gets a bad sector. Time for a new hard drive.
Thanx again guys.
