XP Networking Problem!

Well its been a trouble free week for me so far (NOT!)

I have two PC's at home, one running Win2K (with internet connection) and a XP system that connects through proxy software.

About 2 days ago I noticed that my UD icon was flashing and that no results had been sent. Then I noticed that neither PC would see the other!

No setting have been changed or any new software installed... Its just stopped working..

Now this is the funny thing.. My friend has 5 XP boxes at home and all of them are having the same problem!!!

We are using legit software!!

Any ideas guys?

First of all, are you talking about simple LAN setup? No dial-up or broadband sharing? Is the setup done w/ a switch and two NICs? If so, read on, if not, please ignore.

Not even going to ask you what kinda software you're using, but does your Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties for the W2K system look like this -

* Use the following IP address:
IP address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1

* Use the following DNS server addresses:
Preferred DNS server: 192.168.0.1

And settings for Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties for the WinXP system look like this -

* Use the following IP address:
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1

* Use the following DNS server addresses:
Preferred DNS server: 192.168.0.1

It a basic NIC to NIC LAN with Dial-up on one PC. I normally use the settings you suggested.

I'm using a basic program call AnalogX. I've used this for years now with no problems (because its so simple, no options to get wrong)

Its an odd one, but it wont beat me.

Well, if you put it that way, have you checked for a patch/update for the proxy prog? It's most definitely the proxy prog's fault. I got the above mentioned config going w/ my two systems using a switch, sharing dial-up. All's smooth. Never needed a proxy prog, but do you mind enlighten me on it's benefits or functions?

Basically it just lets other computers share HTTP access. It runs in the task bar and has an enable/disable tab, thats about it!

Whats strange is that the XP Box says that the cable is disconnected. Its not been moved or snagged so I'm at a loss. I'm gonna try a new cable just to check and also look at the NIC's.

Yeah, would love to know what caused the problem. But then you said your friend's having the same prob using the same proxy prog... Oh well, good luck.

sounds silly Slayer but check the cable... Cat-5 isnt the most robust of cables. Failing that see if you can check the NIC's
