This morning I turned on computer, logged on to net, mouse froze. Forced a reboot and it wouldn't get past the WIN XP opening screen.
OK, let it cool down, gave it ten minutes, switched on. After a couple more freeze-ups on boot, I got an error message saying my RAID 0 array had failed.
It told me one of my IBM G60XP 20Gb disks had failed and that I'd have to rebuild the RAID array. Oh poop.
However, I opened up the case, pushed home all the IDE cables and it worked fine. I then noticed a solitary fan blade on the floor of the case. Looks like a blade sheared off of one of my fans for reasons unknown and must have knocked an IDE cable when it flew off.
Phew, that was a bit scary, thought I'd succumbed to the 'Dodgy IBM HDD' club for a minute.

Well Skamp, that's the only clue I got. I admit it seems unlikely, but what else could have caused a cable to dislodge slightly?
I'd left it on overnight, as usual crunchin' proteins, and I'd also left a CDRW on erase, as that takes over an hour.
What's really puzzling is how one fan blade could shear off...

Flops,
There are many people I know who would go through similar circumstances like you and loose their cool. YOU on the other hand go throught HELL and still be able to keep the composure and maintain a wonderful sense of humour!
Bravo!

Good luck. Hope everything remain okay, I don't trust these bloomin machines.:)
Poltergeists. Had to be malicious ghosts. I recommend exorcism forthwith, followed by a gin & tonic . . .

Just curious Flops, which fan was it, mobo, intake, etc. and what brand of fan?

Zammy: I'm beginning to think Case might be right. I had a fan blade break off a Blue Orb once and that thing screamed afterwards, but I didn't notice any unusual noise when I found that sheared off blade in my case so I didn't bother looking to see which fan it was.
I just turned off my computer and had a good look around. I have 5 80mm fans in here and guess what? None of them have lost a blade. Spooky eh?
I even checked the PSU fan, even though there's no way a blade from that could have found it's way into the case.
I don't have a digital camera but I scanned the piece of plastic I think is a blade and have attached it below.
I really don't understand this. I can't see where this piece of plastic has come from. Maybe it's been in there for a long time, but I clean it all out once a month so can't see how I'd have missed it.
Ghosts in the machine?

Aye, you may well be right Mr Skamp, I've known cables and cards to come loose for no apparent reason. And yes, Spring is here now, temps have risen, so who knows?
Still don't explain where the **** that piece of plastic came from

Yup. Unless I'm going quite loopy. Checked and double checked all five 80mm fans. Couldn't see anything amiss. It's a mystery.
Might just take another look in the morning. This is doing my head in

Man I'm going nuts with you all trying to figure this one out!

Did you let loose a pet in that case of yours? 'Cause the only time I broke a fan blade was during a routine cleaning w/ the fan taken out and I applied to much pressure while swipping one of the blades.

Flops, do you live near one of those haunted castles over there, lol. Tis strange indeed, the case of the missing fan blade.
About the IDE cable: I have had a few work themselves loose just from normal operation. When I go into a machine that hasnt been opened for a year or more, I always give the connectors a push.
About the piece of plastic: ?????????
Must have been broken in a previous life.

If that is true to life it looks like it came from a 60mm fan. Are you sure the picture isn't reversed?

That fan blade? About a week before the events outlined here occured, I was messing about with my 92mm Panaflo fan I won in the first UD compo. I had piggy backed it with springs on top of my Alpha 8045/80mm Evercool fan combo to see what difference it made.
Dug the 92mm fan out today and there it was. Or maybe there it wasn't, it had one blade missing.....
I remember now, the fan slipped at one time and there was a bit of a grating noise. That's when I ceased my experimenting.
And the results of piggy backing the 92mm fan on top of an 80mm fan (both sucking up). Dropped from 45C to 41C.
Bit of a pisser, losing my 92mm fan, I was going to mount it in the top of the case blowing out. And I just ordered an 89mm hole saw and Mandrell as well... (cost £16.80)
Guess I got a 92mm fan on my shopping list now :(
And no, IA, I'm not going to use a 120mm fan, the hole saw costs a fortune for that size and I've already ordered the 89mm one :D

Ah Fsck just read this thread so there goes the 120mm recommendation we giving you in the other thread :)
As for the 92mm fan mod, i have been using it forever with no problems but I haven't piggy backed it on ontop of another hehe...neat idea too bad it broke though.
