1280 x 1024 x 32 bit. It's an Iiyama 1451 19" which is bottom of their range, so only running on 75Hz refresh.
I've tried all settings and that works best.

It depends on what I'm doing,I use 800x600 32 bit high color some.Other times I change to a higher resolution for some games etc.Usually I go with whatever is easier on my :eyes:

umm I don't know how to measure the resolution on my tandy 1000 :P
I am running ATM 1280x1024, but yes I did notice that IA with the color. on my cheap monitor I can't run high resolutions, but my 19# KDS trinitron, seems to handle what I can throw at it for now

Generally leave it at 1024x768x32 on a 19" dell for gp use, games
seem to work best with my card at this setting...
I will go to 1280x1024 when doing some graphics work but that is rare..
On the 17" goldstar, it's 800x600x32, limited by the old viper vid card only having 8 meg and the not so great .32 dot pitch of
the display..
on the laptops, it is keyed to the display type/size minimum is
800x600.
Except for a few older ones where 640x480 is all that is supported.
I also use small icons wherever possible.

800x600 works for me on my 15" LCD. 75mhz refresh rate, brightness levels at 75%, and an overhead monitor light which was initially for lighting up the keyboard, is now indispensible when it comes to cutting screen glare. Can't compute w/o it.

Damn I spent most all day yesterday trying the two most popular settings.Hell I have good eyes, but for some reason I can't seem to get things adjusted right.I have the NEC 20 inch MutiSync 90 monitor, and the Nvidia 64 MB card.Is there somewhere on the web that you can go and get it setup, similar to what I hear about from the XP users?I tried doing all I could, and still ended up going back to the 800x600 32bit color  Thanks :D

Hi Muck's,
I have tried the 21.83,23.11,28.32 (certified) and nothing seems to do the trick.I'm sure it's probably all the darn adjustments.Either that or I just got so use to the 800x600 that my eyes are used to it.I'll try again today and see how I do :D.Thanks
Duhhh,I just read, you said Monitor, not video. The drivers came on a disk if I recall for my monitor.I'll go to device manager and make sure I have the latest. Thanks for the assist !!

Tuffie the latest version of the nvidia drivers is 29.42 so you might want to try those. Also if you have been using 800x600 for a really long time then switching to something else is gonna be hard on your eyes for a few days.

I've tried all settings and that works best.
I've just installed the latest ATI Radeon drivers (about 4 days old now) and I can now quite comfortably run at the above settings but at 85Hz.
Previously on a large white area such as a Word Document I could notice flicker, now I do not.
And the picture quality is so much better. I'm impressed. And really, really pleased :)

I was expecting to see the results more towards the higher resolutions but can understand why 1024x768 is the popular choice. For me, I need the real estate and even run 1280x1024 on my 19" Monitor at work.
Dayem Martz 1800x1440? I wonder how that would look...wooo that's small.
Darcs, in a nutshell we are talking about the vertical refresh rate, the frequency of passes that the monitor redraws the screen. The lower the refresh rate the more noticeable you will see "flicker" which gives people eyestrain. The threshold is different for everyone but most seem to agree that 72Hz is where most people start to feel comfortable and not notice the flicker.
Hell, Im at 90Hz this week...just because I can :)

Just be careful about poppin your refresh rate too high beyond the capabilities of the monitor - there is a checkbox on that monitor page which says to hide all rates the monitor can't support. DO NOT REMOVE THAT CHECKBOX...you can do some serious damange to your monitor if you aren't careful.

Darcy, leave ur refresh rate at 60, the way TFT's work, are different from the CRT monitors folks use here. 60hz on a CRT would give u a blinding headache within 5 minutes of looking at it, due to visible flickering - that doesn't happen on a TFT. A lot of TFT's native refrsh rate is 60hz, so best leave as is.

I finally installed a vid card that allows 1024x768 but me eyes are not adjusting. I prefer the larger font I can get from 800x600. How'd ya do it Tuffie? Eye transplant? :( My refresh rate is 75 (highest setting) which shouldn't make a diff on an LCD screen, should it?
What monitor do you have Mons?
1024x768 should be readable on a decent 17" screen, provided the focus is ok. (and you are wearing your glasses/contacts) :)
Note: you can change the default font size in IE and windows too.

Damn, y'all want the review now? Well, it's gonna be my next project. It's a Sony SDM-S81. Not the DVI model, but it'll do just fine. One thing's for sure, it's hella big. But since I work on a 17" CRT everyday, I get use to the changes. Everything's sharp. Actually fast enough for me to watch DVD and DivX movies. Text's sharp, graphics are nice... the usual. I'll think of something when I write the review. And yeah, I get 2 feet of space between my eyes and the screen now. Wish I had the money earlier. Have lots of room on my desk for the keyboard and other toys like scanner. And no more blockage on the front speakers. I think it's a good deal for $750... not really, paying the bills hurt.

:hhead: It was taking me way too long to find those default settings, finally thought to ask google. Much better now. I also changed a slew of settings in the Display Props. I'm still finding pockets of small type (such as in the BBT response box) but everything is sharp & legible, even w/o my glasses. Just take some getting used to I guess.
My monitor is a 15" LCD slapped together by Gateway. It always irked me that the manual states '1024x768 is the best resolution for this monitor' and then their onboard video offered only 800x600 rez. :eyes:
Ah, a 15" LCD. Make sure you have it at the correct angle. If it is tilted too far forward or back then you will go blind trying to read it. You are correct, 15" may be a little small for 1024x768.
If you could only go to 800x600 then there was a problem with the video drivers. Even integrated video does better than that. Probably the onboard video chip wasnt being detected properly by windows.
The reason that they give a suggested resolution setting is that LCD screens really only run at that one setting. Any other setting is converted to 1024x768 which may cause slight jagged edges on fonts, but you may not even notice it. Try running at 800x600 for a while, it may not bother you.
And how does shining a light on the LCD reduce glare?
Montana
08-31-2002, 09:30 PM
LOL, happy to see u too prod. Dance on dude.
Oh yeah I've discovered the 'ups & downs' of LCD's. I also like to touch the screen with my fingertip once in a while for that 'falling into the TV Poltergeist effect'. :}
You were right about the video drivers. Several days ago I found a link to an .inf file at the Gateway site for the 1024 rez. But that's neither here nor there right now as I do plan on going back to 800. The positives don't outweigh the negatives enough to justify the 1024 rez for moi. :(
The light does not shine on the LCD but in front of it. My own little thought on the matter had the lightwaves from my overhead light cancelling out some of the lightwaves from the monitor thereby reducing the glare/shine from the screen but not any actual reflections or glare on the screen itself.
Without going into details, I first started using an overhead light-one of those twisty neck types sitting on tower-to illuminate my keyboard in an otherwise dark room. When I moved the PC to a different location, I didn't think I needed the light. Within 15 min I was feeling more than the usual eyestrain. I've tested this effect many times just to ensure I wasn't fooling myself. The brightness level for monitor is at 81%, any lower causes eyestrain as well.
I started using an overhead light long b4 I ever heard of them, so I'm sure I'm not a gullible victim of advertising. However, I do like this guys (http://www.dansdata.com/eclipse.htm) review of such lights. Still using my same old lamp though.

Don't you mean SDM-M81? 'Cause I just spent 5 minutes looking for the DVI out you're talking about. All I got is the HD15 out.
I don't regret getting the analog version though. It's clean, it's sharp, and it's fast enough for DVD viewing. So it's all good. Running 1280x1024x32.
