My nephew had a problem with his machine which I fixed but I am now looking to upgrade the board with a faster processor. The info on the board is a little weak, but this is what I've discovered.

The motherboard is a Biostar M6TLA (http://www.biostar-usa.com/Archives/archivespecs/m6series/m6tla/Product_M6TLA.htm). It currently has a Slot1 PII 233. I am wondering if I should try to upgade to a Celeron 533.

The new bios for this board says it added Medocino support. So what should I look for when purchasing a 533 cpu, if I can find one?

I also haven't been able to find the jumper settings for the 533 Celeron. The manual only has 300mhz, which are the PII max settings.

Thanx in advance.

Usually you can determine some logical pattern to the jumpers once you sit down with it for a while. The page there lists a max of 500, so I would stick with that.
If you dont already have the celeron lying around, I would consider a new mobo too. A cheap ECS mobo with a duron should be under $100, then the system could be a lot more useful. Even if it uses pc66 ram, I have found that a lot of modules will run at 100 with conservative timings.

Prod,

I've thought about that, but I'm trying to get this done as cheap as possible. My other option is to replace this mb/cpu with a K6/2-400 that I currently am trying to sell. I figure I can get a Celery 500 for around $25.

We'll see.

Actually I was going to suggest a k6 combo too. If you already have some of the parts, maybe that is a good idea.
I gave my old k62 450 to my son and it runs everything fine, although I havent tried winXP.
With a decent video card like a radeon, they can run some of the recent games too.

Looks like I may have found a Celeron with a slotket for $24 shipped. Now I have to find the damn jumper settings. I e-mailed Biostar. I wonder how long that'll take.
