I am trying to get a computer(Dell Optimus GXI PII 400. 192 mgs memory) to connect to the Internet through a DialUp connection.

When you go to the Control Panel(Win98) and click on Network, the Network window displayed only gives one choice for the Primary Network Logon. That choice is Windows Logon. When I try to configure the settings they all apply to a network, which I do not have.

I have an external US Robotics modem amd it will go all the way to the end of the handshake and disconnect saying that there is no adapter installed, which is true.

How do I get the Network configuration window to display an option for Family Logon in the Primary Network Logon drop-down menu so that I can install the proper adapter to connect to the Internet? Or is it possible to do so with the Windows Logon chosen?

Thanks for any help.

Hey dubber,

It has been a very long while since I messed around with dialup, but don't you have to install the modem first, forgetting all about Network settings at first. Like through the Add New Hardware part of CP. Once installed then you should be able to configure it. I'd remove all traces from Settings>CP> Network first before I proceed.

If I recall, there is one that says, make new connection, then it brings up a box for you to complete the info.I had three in my Dialup Networking at one time on 98se.If you have the dialup networking installed, that should be there.

man, y'all people take broadband for granted sometimes. Good thing I still use dial-up. haha

At the Network window of your modem's properties, you'll need to add Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), leave the properties in that auto. uncheck the Windows Logon box. And you're set.

Click Add and choose Client and click on Microsoft on the left. Choose Microsoft Family Logon and install it.

Click Add again, and choose Adapter and click on Microsoft and choose Dial Up Adapter.

If no instance of TCP/IP shows up bound to it (it should), click on Add and choose Protocol and click on Microsoft and add TCP/IP.

Dubber, you can find the complete steps in configuring a MSDUN connection in Win9x here:

Thanks for your replies. I stumbled around and got it working. I am posting with it now. Not exactly sure what did it. Going now to put UD on it and add it to the Arkies.

Edit:
Thanks Grogan. I'll bookmark that site as I am sure I'll have similar problems in the future.
