Ok guys, gonna make this as short as possible:

Got a new maxtor 40gb w/the 3 yr warranty today at bestbuy, been installing all afternoon. Just when I thought all was ok, I had made the mistake of sizing the partitions bass ackwards. All I really wanted to do was format and start fresh, but didn't have that option. It copied hd1 partitions to the new hd and it just completed. Do I have to do an "unformat" on the new hd and start over? Or what? I want the new hd to be the boot drive and understand all I'll have to do is switch the jumpers when I get it like I want. Really need some good advice now...

I take it you used the maxtor utilities? If so, and you had the first disk copied to your new disk, then you should just have to switch the jumpers and make your new disk the master and your old one the slave. You should also switch the ide ribbon cable, the last connector goes to the master and the middle connector goes to slave.

Thanks for the reply Dramen, but I want to do a fresh install of the new hd. And yes am using the maxtor maxblast and thought I had it figured out on the reformat...BUT...it keeps asking for the start up files for windows. I have the boot disks, it will not accept those, even tried the 98 boot disk and it also rejected it. Do I just do a FORMAT in dos and be done w/it?

I would do it that way SrCitizen. much less of a pain that way.

OK, thought you were asking how to switch disks after copying over the os.

Yeah, the easiest way for a fresh install is to put your new hd in as master and then just format it (manually in dos or the os will during install) and then install the os.
