One of the first things you'll want to do on the internet is set yourself up an e-mail account. Most Internet Service Providers provide you with at least one when you subscribe to their service.

Normally, when you perform an online signup a small file is downloaded to your computer, which configures your internet access with that ISP, and programs Outlook Express with your e-mail details.

Sometimes however, you need to do this manually! Any ISP worth it's salt will at the very least give you the server and logon details for your mail account, and then it's up to you to configure the mail program of your choice with those details.

In this short tutorial, we will show you how to manually configure a mail account in Outlook Express (OE).

Firstly, start OE, and if you aren't presented with a wizard immediately, click "tools" then "accounts".

Look along the top of the window that appears, and select the "Mail" tab.

Next, look to the right hand side of the window, and click the "Add" button.

A popup box should appear, from which you should select "Mail"

A new window should appear entitled "Internet Connection Wizard" which will guide you through setting up your mail account. First off, enter the name which you would like to appear on your e-mails to people.

Click "Next" and type in the e-mail address which your isp should have (hopefully) given you.

This is where it gets a little more technical. Your ISP will have (hopefully) given you two addresses which allow your mail program to find your incoming and outgoing mail servers on the internet. An example of these two mail servers is shown below.

Often, the address for your incoming and outgoing mail servers are the same, but take care when entering these details as any sort of error will prevent your mail from working.

Once you have entered these details, click "Next". You will then be asked for your mail server logon details. Typically the username and password requested will be the same as that used for a dialup or ftp account.

When you are entering these details, be particularly mindful of upper or lower case characters in the username and password fields. Most servers are very fussy about this, and the success or failure of a mail account setup can be down to as little as one capital letter being where it shouldn't be!

Click "Next" again, and you will have completed the mail account signup. Click "Finish" and you will be dropped back to the screen you saw previously, where you should now be able to see an entry showing your newly set up account.

Click "Close" and you should be returned directly to your normal OE screen. To test the account, look to the buttons along the near top of the OE window, and click "Send/Recv".

If everything has worked ok, you shouldn't see any errors, and you might even have some mail in your inbox!
