View Full Version : Temps seem too low!!!

I've just installed my new MSI Pro2 RU board and RAID 0 Maxtor 40 Gigers. Everything seems to be running fine and I have my 1.4 set to 140 X 11 (1540 MHz)

Before when I had my Abit KT7A installed my load temp was 46*C and my idle was 39*C, now I have a load temp of 35*C and a idle of 29*C. Surley this can't be right!!! I have noticed that the thermistor on the MSI board is mounted directly onto the mobo unlike the Abit's sensor that could be moved to touch the CPU.

How accurate is the MSI temp probe?

Another thing I have noticed with the MSI board is that there seems to be no option to change the IO voltage. Its displayed in the BIOS but there is not switch for 3.3 - 3.9 as there is on the Abit board.

Any ideas guys.

Cheers,
Slayer. :)

I have always just used the bios temps as just a guide. On both my Iwills, I have had a 6 degree variance with the same chip and heatsink!!! I pulled out the old KK266 board and put in a KK266 plus, everything was the same, from HD to neon light. I got an enermax unit that mesures dual temp and right now there is a 2 degree difference, VIAHWM is 2 degrees cooler than it should be.
Also the MSI probe might not be making great contact with the CPU, unlike your abit.

on the IO, not sure. Wish I could help.

Don't know if these will be of any help Slayer, but our little community here doesn't seem to have too many MSI products, there might be something useful for ya here:

Hey now!!! I have an MSI Geforce2 vid card. and I am pretty sure my next board is gonna be an MSI. *acts sorta hurt*

Actually I tend to agree with CatCorpse. I dont put tremendous faith in the on board sensors. they vary to much. I, on the advice of someone, {ok IA}, invested in a compunurse. this gives a better temp reading. Or so they say. But it was consistantly a degree cooler than the onboard sensors.

And my temps tween my BIOS and MBM and the compunurse range each other by 5 deg c.

If the Thermistor isn't touching the core bro, that explains it! Its merely measuring the air in the socket cavity. Mobo manufacturers try to extrapolate the real temp but aren't very good at it. That's why you'll notice sometimes BIOS flashes give you different temps because the manufactures are changing this extrapolation.

IWILL has the same "problem" you are seeing...I use a Nurse now to measure CPU temps and like Corpse, my IWILL thermistor was always 5-6 degreees cooler then my Nurse. My ABIT before that was 2-3C cooler then the Nurse.

Go for a Nurse!

BTW...hopefully Flops and Stoner can chime in with their MSI boards regarding the voltage I/O

Yes, interesting stuff. So you can't change the I/O volt and the tempt's extremely low huh? I'll check the I/O in a minute... okay, turns out the AMI/Award BIOS doesn't have such setting... as for the CPU tempt, try getting a CompuNurse like the fellas said, shave the sides down some so you can fit it between the HSF and CPU, have the tip of your probe touch the side of the CPU core, and tape the sucker down. Be very careful in the process, you don't want to leave a gap between the HSF and core due to having the probe in the middle. Now see what tempts you get.

Thanks guy's, Nurse on order, should be with me tomorrow...

Stoner - The MSI board doesnt have a IO voltage setting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats really messed up. How can all the people on the net overclock so well with the standard board without this setting? I have it running at 140 X 11 @ 1.8v at the moment an it runs like a dream, but any higher and it crashes.

I can't see any jumpers either!

Sorry if this sounds a little "sarky" but MSI are not Abit ... Abit based there boards around the "OC Ferternaty" and as such gave you a better "spectrum" for OC'ing ... MSI have always build thier boards on reliability however, they seem to have relented slighty in that you can now OC, all be it with limitations.

As a system builder I need stability I have never built an Abit for "Joe Public" that said I have built 3 for myself. I will be going over to MSI as I am getting to old for this job and my Doctor says I have to keep my blood pressure down. :D

I have Abit KT7's, Asus A7V and MSI K7T Turbo boards, and my favourite for sure is the MSI. I have also found the MSI surprisingly OC'able. I also have an FIC VA-503+ which my K6 runs in, another un-assuming mobo maker that quitely turns out unspectacular, but reliable boards.

Mucks - Not at all mate. I know exactly what you mean. I built 10 systems last week and used MSI in all of them ( I don't want any headaches this close to Christmas) I didnt expect the MSI board to be as tweakable as the ABIT, I just thought the IO voltage option was standard kit on all new boards...

I can get a fairly good OC with the MSI and everything runs smooth, so I can't really complain. I have a Abit KR7 on order so everything will be fine and dandy soon. It's just a shame that the MSI board doesnt have all the features of the ABIT board. If they did have them MSI would be hard to beat.

That they would Slayer, that they would.

Now how do toy rate the "QDI Koduz" ... :D

to change the CPU core voltage on the chips bridges.:D
