Ok, so alot of you might already have heard about this but last night (well it was this morning actually) i fried my XP 1600+.

It all began when i started work on my 92mm to 60mm fan adaptor so that i could attach a 92 panaflow to my SK6. Tha adaptor was a nice job and quite sturdy and i was pretty proud of myself. So i stuck the panaflow in the adaptor and used a load of duct tape to attach the adaptor over the heat sink to the side of the case.I booted up and had a look at the temps. They where fucking worse by a degree and there was no drop in noise either. I then relised that i was getting a fucking huge ammount of backsplash from the adaptor. Obviously the static pressure of the fan wasn't high enough.

So i took the thing down to put the original YS-Tech 60mm on it. In the proccess i dropped the adaptor on the mobo and it hit my secondary video card knocking of a small heat sink which i then glued back on. With the original fan now in place i booted the system only to have it not post. Oh Shit! KaraK then came into the room and suggested that i down clock it since the L1 bridges might have locked. So we set it to a lower multiplier than default. no boot, set it to default, boot. Horra! Take the HSF off re-do the L1 bridges (they where locked somehow), put HSF back on and fire it up. No boot, then funny noise. Mmmm, take of HSF, smelt silicon burning. Argh! Had gotten a bad contact due to the shim sliding around some and poof!

KaraK was nice enough to lend me the duron Cat had sent him so i got that up at 800 and carried on. Went online and ordered a new chip. Got the 1800+ for the hell of it. Then decide that we'd drive 40 mins down the road to pick it up. However what should have taken 5mins took took over 2 hours due to a conveyor fault at the wearhouse. We had to get a KFC due to starvation and i nearly ended up buying a 10/100 8 port Netgear switch to make the wait seem more worth while.

So all in all it's been one fucked up day and i'm now £145 poorer with only a burned out CPU to show for it.

You "poor" man. Damn the shims, knew they are up to no good.:growl: Wait, I'm hearing things, and it sounds like Alpha PAL8045. :stoner1: Nah, couldn't do that, it'll break your bank.

Sorry to hear about that MD, bummer for sure. So many little things can go wrong when we are futzing about. Say, have you been hanging around CC a lot?

fucked up day? hasnt it just ? :D

at least you have a shiny new proc now and my Duron is back in its proper place and crunching cancer on behalf of me again :) Besides having re-applied the ASII and re-seated the HSF appears to have brought the temps down a smidge (its at 49C now as opposed to 51C) so I might try pushing it back up to 900 again ... hurrah ! OK I'm rambling now so I'll just shut up now ok ?

Zammy: The two UK fellas are haunted by the Curse of Cat's Fuzzy Duron. :hapystone

Of course, it's the duron thats to blame, i'm gona have to go and destroy that right now.

AS: speaking of Alphas, i have considered them, but then i always remeber that they won't fit on my mobo unless i move a capacitor or take a dremel to the side of the alpha.

MD: Which mobo you got?

BTW, the Force is strong with Cats' Duron. Beware...

It's a giga-byte GA-7DXR. It can take an Alpha, but it's a risk.

Damn MD, sorry to hear you toasted your chip, but like the fellas said, it's the Curse of the CC Duron, take it now, before it's too late, to your local clergy and have it excorcized, or bury it in a lead box on hallowed ground, and don't forget to throw the shim in with it:D

Hey Dawg...put a dab of glue on the shim to hold it in its place the next time. Sorry to hear about the burnt chip :(

IA's right MD, put about four dabs of glue on the outer edges of the shim where it meets the chip, then quickly place your HSF on top of it, then a small weight of some sort, like a book, and that should keep the glue that may seep under the shim from lifting it while it's drying:D

IT WASN"T ME
I am glad thought that you got an 1800+. ALKAZAM, did you say you wanted me to come on over and watch over your computers :D to be honest with you, I havn't used a spacer in quite a while. I almost had that happen once, but I caught it and since then my spacer is on my desk top rather than in my computer
