Fooling with my fans today, I decided to find a way to get more cool air to my cpu. I took the case fan mounted at the bottom front of my case and stuck it in the 5.25" bays. Just popped out the bottom 2 bay covers and sat the 80mm fan in there to see if it helped. If it make a diff, maybe I would add a blowhole.
Instant 6 degree improvement
Went from 28/52 to 27/46 celsius. I had no idea it would make that much difference. The hard drives and video card are still ok too, so I think Im going to make a permanent panel to mount it properly. No need to cut the steel side panel :)

Whoa...that's some serious improvement! How much cfm is the 80mm fan pushing...and u got a pic of your case innards...I wanna see! Too bad though...i don't have any empty 5.25 bays :cryol:

Picture, we need to see a damn picture man. And what the hell do you have installed in that system... empty 5 1/4 bays?

Sorry, no DC for pics. Its a 43cfm sunon with the 4pin molex.
Just a cheap OEM midtower case with a CDRW in the top bay of 3. Removed the bottom 2 covers and just sat the fan in there to try it. The 5.25 drive cage and cdrw make a good wind tunnel pointed right at the cpu.
Now when I take off the side panel, I feel the cool wind blowing all over the hsf and out the rear fan.
The IDE cables are flat and block a good part of the air flow tho, rounded ones would help a lot. Time to get out the razor blade. Theres gonna be blood:vamp:
If I had 3 open bays, a 120mm would fit perfect.
What do you guys do with all your 5.25 bays, quantum bigfoots in a raid array? ;)

prod: nice and ghetto huh? kick ass. wish I have free 5.25s, but sys one has 2 mobile racks + CD, sys two has 2 mobile racks + DVD + CDRW.

dammit...if i had bought that new case I was thinking about I could install a 120mm in the front bays easily and still have my 2 CD/DVD and Mobile Racks in there. Definate on the IA Airflow design come next time

Ghetto is right.
If I upgraded the volcano 2 on the duron, then this wouldnt be necessary. :D

I dont think I need a top fan. I have a rear fan by the cpu and dual fan enermax right above it. With the fan in front, the air at the top of the case is nice and cool.
One problem, I need a grille on that front fan quick to mount it in the two cdrom bays. Any household materials come to mind? I would prefer some kind of steel mesh, like the kind that covers cheap speakers. Cant think of anything I have on hand right now.

Every once in a while I hear a buzzing noise, I turn around and my son is sticking his finger in the damn fan. Lil bugger seems to like it :) So its unplugged most of the time now.

PC70. man, doesn't that thing have (4) 80mm for exhaust in the back? two above PSU and two below. Don't tell me you followed IA's lamer's advice and had everything as intake. You're might want to set the two fans below to PSU to exhaust and the other four for intake, so that hot air from the Alpha could be forced out the back. Still, I'm not comfy about the damn + airflow scheme. I'm doing super negative with 1 intake and 3 exhaust on both my systems.

I give up... you're on your own cutting up that case now.

Sorry man but Im with AS on this one.
Better to have the exhaust fans as close to the cpu as possible.

skamp if u doing neg airflow...take kiwi's and stoner's advice. If you brave, make a top blowhole and do the chimeny airflow like mine. It works bro...don't listen to the bastard. He's just jealous he has to clean his damn case 5 times as much as mine because of his negative pressure :FU:

Positive pressure rules. hell right now the rear case fan on my power supply is dead, its a 450watt power supply, i should be worried, but since i have 2 120 mm fans blowing into the side of the case i just taped closed the top rear case fan hole, and even with the holes i've drilled into the front there's enough air blowing out of the back of the power supply to blow my hair back. IA speaks the truth. give it a shot :P lurch
