... from Mandrake 9.1 Linux land. :D

I see the font situation has not changed since MD7.1 ... I have my reading glasses on AND my seeing glasses on top of them to read this. :sarcastic

Oh, I'm NOT impressed. Its taken me 4 hours to get here. More on that later.

Anyway think I'll have a

Darcy! Not from my perspective is the font a problem, altho I am using v9.0. It may takes some configuring to get it to where the individual wants it, as it did me, but then I expected that to happen. :O

I have a problem with default anything, so I setup to please me which can be somewhat daunting in any system. ;)

I've installed a couple hundred fonts in the windows systems and then removed all but a couple of dozen that appeal to me. Linux is no different, IMO. Same story, different name. :)

Most importantly is the fact that Linux is different and there is most certainly a learning curve to deal with it. But then, so is learning to use a windows system.

To me, that difference is what makes Linux superior in many ways. Its dang sure faster and far far more stable. Linux never claimed to be perfect, not yet anyway, but it does keep getting much better as each new version comes along.

FWIW! :D

So adjust your fonts...

KDE Control Center under Appearance

Within the Konqueror browser's options you can also adjust fonts or temporarily increase the size using the icon on the top toolbar.

I intend to.

Yep, this is true ... but I just get a BIGGER mess. Don't fret too much Grogan, I can always reformat. :D

My problem is I get frustrated with the time it takes to do what I consider a "simple" job.

I did get it to play a music CD after finding out how to tell it what to do with the sound card. :sarcastic However I’m not very happy with the outcome ... it keeps skipping? Copy all 500Mb of songs to the HD and it still skips, though not as much.

... as you say ... it’s configurable … but quicker?? Sorry no, not on this system. I'm dual booting with XP and so far XP wins. However, it’s not a competition of speed I'm looking for but can Linux replace Windows for me.

It takes a little time to set-up Windows how YOU want it … it looks as though I will need more time than I first thought in getting Linux al-a-mucks.

I've overcome ... no sound, no modem, no Internet I'm sure I can overcome a small problem of READING TEXT. :smirk:

:uk:

I don't think so, here you be the judge.

Day one with mandrake 9.1 filemanager :D

Yep, seems fine to me. I wear reading glasses when I'm on the computer and all looks good within Mandrake 9.1 at stock settings.

Suggest: New glasses/video card/monitor may improve the situation :D

... thanks, but yes it is, the default font in any "browser" is quite frankly crap. The overall desktop settings are fine. Showing me the "end results" just smacks of smugness on your part. Grogan was a little more helpful in his sarcasm.

Yesterday was spent on "how to play a music CD" well actually an MP3 CD with 8 hours of music.

I have tried Kaboodle and Noatum, silly names, and at best can play one track at a time. :sarcastic

Huh oh ... Noatum has a play list ... its working.

I consider myself quite intelligent, stop laughing, and I continually find myself trying Windows solutions to a problem. What else can I compare Linux with ... DOS? CPM? No it’s a little more polished than that, I hope.

I'm not trying to upset the Linux community here ... just trying to get my poor head around Linux. Got to keep the grey matter working but keep getting a BSOD in my head. :Tong:

I have a whole host of website bookmarks including Google but I'm constantly getting beaten by the terminology.

One of my biggest problems is, unlike Flopps, I don't ask for help ... I sarcastically make rude comments at my own inability to solve a problem with Linux. I guess, at my age, I still have a lot to learn.

Please don't take any of my comments personally.

Love & Peace Man. :sorry:

As Mucks says, tis true, if I don't know sump'n, I ask. I really don't give a monkeys if some peeps think I'm stoopid, cos ya can't know everything :D

I personally think I know a little about everything but not a lot about one particular subject. I have yet to choose which avenue I'll take to get real knowledgeable on. I'm thinking it may be video conversion, I'm getting really interested in that.

Give me a toolbox and a soldering iron, I'm comfortable. Software complexities leave me scratching me head more often than not, but I'm getting there :)

Flopps

I don't mind being considered stoopid, the fact is, I can't formulate my questions so that they make sense to anyone. Hell, by the time i get thru I'm as confused as the peeps who are trying to help... I just don't have the correct terminology.

You just keep on asking cos every time u do I learn a little more. :)

Welcome to the world of Linux Mucks. Stay with it for awhile. If you are like me, the challenge and knowledge gained is worth it. It will take awhile to get an understanding of the system but you will discover that it is quite simple in it's structure and quite configurable.

Grogan and BobGuy have been a big help in getting me going in the right direction. A little ... OK, a lot of hand holding at the start went a long way to understand how to get things done, what to fear and what not to fear. I've only been at it for a few months and still a Linux newbie, but I'm not on chat with Grogan for hours at a time trying to get something working and I can't tell you how many times I've rebuilt the kernel. (probably the easiest thing to do in Linux).

As you have discovered by now, there is no similarity between Windows and Linux. DOS is what would get in my way. I would relate Linux to DOS and in some ways still do. Directory trees are still directory trees. Linux uses scripts which are similar to batch files. You will start to think in terms of Linux after awhile, however. It all takes time. You didn't learn DOS over night.

My simplistic view of Linux is a kernel and scripts which start a bunch of cobbled together exec files. You can run what you want, change what you want.

Good luck and have fun.
