Can anyone tell me what the connection speed for my DSL should be? I connect the DSL modem via network connection to the router, and my computer connects to the router. I can view my connection speed and I get all kinds of numbers, 600,000 on a good day, usually more like 300,000, sometimes even down to 60,000bps. My ISP, which is AOL, won't give me a straight answer.

What speed did AOL promise you?
My DSL runs through the local phone co. and I can sign up for different speeds at different prices.
I signed up for 384/256 at $35 a month. They only guarentee _up_ to those speeds. Mine run a little under those.

I didn't have an option to sign up for different speeds, it was called "high speed" and there are no specific speeds listed. After dial up, anything seemed appealing! When I ask them they give me a runaround about freeing system resources and emptying the temporary internet files folder to make it run faster. The next time I asked what my connection speed should be, I got instructions on how to see what my current connection speed is, which still didn't answer my question.

If you haven't tried this place yet it is probably the best known for speed test on DSL & Cable. On the left side click on Our Tools and run the Tweak test & then hit the back button and run the speed tests. It will give you a pretty good idea :D

Here is a link to where I test my connection speed.

DSL is highly dependent on the physical distance from your house to the nearest ISP CO (central office).
They of course can limit your speed further. I'm located about 15,000 feet from my CO and get around 1.2 Mbs.

Here's a couple of old threads that we had going so you could read through them and perhaps do a comparison. Lots of results for dsl and cable with some figures for a comparison.

It's funny, when I talked to my isp about the maximum, I couldn't get an answer either. After poking around the forums at dslreports, I finally found out. They have different forums for different types of services in various regions of the country.

Well I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one getting the runaround, I thought I was a dunce or something.....well that issue may still be open for debate, but at least I have somewhere to start now. Thanks so much everyone!
