I know there is a free version of the Fraunhoffer encoder and its quite good - only limitation is that the bitrate is limited to 128.
It's command line based but its easy enough to use once you get used to it. I havent used the one Quadophile mentioned but it sounds quite funky.

You bet it is funky, the DB Power Amp has very good features and can manage all the way upto 320 with Blade and Lame both as options. Besides it also rips into simple wave format.
You should try it as it will cost you nothing, the file too is very small for download, something like 1.2 MB if my memory serves me right.
cool thx guys, i'll try them both out and see what i come up with, appreciate the help, sinc. lurch
Lurch:
I've been using a program called 'Simple' for a over a year now. Like the title says, it's simple and is absolutely free. Small download as well.
It converts any combination of MP3's, WAV's and CD tracks from one to the other. It's very quick and works well. I've been using it solidly for over a year now, has never let me down. Also has jitter correction, which is great if you have an old scratched CD you want to copy and are nervous about getting them little clicks sometimes.
You can get it from:

Quad: I tried dB Power Amp about a year ago and couldn't get on with it. As I remember, it came in several modules. Has it been upgraded since then? The way you describe it, it sounds real good.

Yes Flops, as I mentioned in my post earlier I discoved it very recently (just last month) and I am to understand it is an updated version. I did not find any problems with it. In fact I spent good 2-3 hours looking for the right MP3 encoder (free) for someone. I came across few and downloaded all of them and did experiments for few more hours. Lot of hard work I must say but surely no regrets as I wanted to get the hang of the programs and the way they handled the extractions. I also saw very good reviews from people who are into ripping for this particular program.
I think lurch is now working on it, lets see what his opinion is. You already know mine. By the way see my other post on Exact Audio Copy which I posted just an hour ago.
I'll go take a look at that post right now :)
I too looked for a free audio file conversion proggie for a long time, tried quite a few, and yes, it was time consuming, but I've had very good results with Simple. I can't fault it.
However, it never hurts to look at something else, so I'll give it a go. Probably not tonight though, had a tiring day and I'm cream-crackered (=knackered=jolly well pooped out :))

Been using AudioCatalyst 2.1 by Xing for the past couple of years. Simply the best. You'll have to find the cracked version though.
Just DLed dMC (DB), going to do a time benchmark between my decoder vs. this one. Stay tune.

Okay, I have the results.
The dbPowerAMP is to my surprise faster in encoding, and slightly superior in sound quality. But it has no CDDB direct connect feature, so you'll have to type in the tracks.
AMD Tbird 800 @ 950MHz
Micron 256MB PC133
W2K SP2
Reader: Pioneer 16x DVD
CD: 56 Minutes
Bit Rate: 160 Kbps
Volume Normalize: On
dbPowerAMP = 12 minutes 25 seconds
AudioCatalyst = 14 minutes
Hat's off to Quad for recommending an excellent product.
dbPowerAMP gets 4 1/2 out of 5 Cannabis Leafs.

Anybody tried "CDex" ... I don't know if it will suit you Lurch but it supports CDDB.
CDex is a freeware application, which is able to extract audio tracks from a CD-ROM digitally, and save those files to disk as either regular WAV file or MP3 files.

Mucks, Exact Audio Copy is far superior to CDex IMHO.

Lurch, which one worked for you?
hey man, well the weekend isn't over yet, well so far, on fri, i did this pc build for this chick in my school, the brand new motherboard had a broken pin from shipping i assume, so when i was getting the floppy disk fail (40) i was sure that it was something that i wasn't setting up right or bad disk drive or no power , i diagnosed everything trying new floppy wires, the whole nine slowly eliminating possibilities the whole time not seeing that there was a pin missing, (the lighting to that part of the mobo wasn't great and i was just plugging and unplugging, oh well) finally i see thats its a no go, so by now its midnight, go to my house with her new hard drive, boot up set up hard drive with partitions ghosting from her old drive the whole nine, 2am go back to her house, let windows install every chip on the motherboard, do some software checking, go home, 4am, wake up work 645am(landscaping), with a mix of advil(for the headache), along with a coke-a-cola and a centrum for boosters i make it out of the house, worked my 10 hour day, am now near dead state, but i'll get to it man, if not tonight tommorow, but thx to everone for the help, sinc. lurch

Well, Mr exporter-of-all-things-that-are-good-to-cool-a-CPU, did you eventually make a decision?
I must confess, I tried that one recommended by Quadophile (where the hell is he lately?) dbpoweramp, and I've stuck with it. It works just as well as 'simple' but has a whole load more options.
So, just goes to prove, you can teach an old dog new tricks :)
