I have a Creative SB Live! card in my PC I have run it with Win2K and WinXP and seem to suffer the same problem with both OS. Basically after 10-15 minutes of playing MP3s through Winamp it begins to distort. It is as if the bass has been turned up way to high and the speakers can't handle it but its not a speaker problem.

I am using the default Win2K and XP drivers.

EDIT: And I have tried three sets of speakers from different manufacturers, all show the same results.

Any ideas?

Is the problem exclusive to Winamp playback? Does MS Media Player suffer the same prob? Which version of Winamp are you using?

It may be worth trying an upgrade to the newly released Winamp, V.2.79 I think, off the top of me head.

And I'm assuming you have the latest drivers from Creative installed for the card?

That's an odd fault, JD. A million to one shot but the card could be faulty. Problems that occur after a period of time often indicate a defective electronic component overheating.

EDIT: Or there could be a fault with your loudspeaker system's amplification, although, come to think of it, you've said the speakers are OK. I'm assuming your speaker system is active and not passive. Have you tried the speaker system with another rig?

A process of elimination required here. If you've already been through all that, forgive me for stating the obvious :)

It seems to be with all audio apps although TBH I only use Winamp, the rest of the time the sound card is used only for email notification, MSN messenger alerts and the beeps and squeaks from the CD burner software.

Anyways...I'm ranting.... I will do the following and report back.

1. Update Winamp and test
2. Update Drivers and test
3. Swap card with one in Slayers team leaders PC and test

more news in a day or two.

And try the latest motherboard drivers, assuming you have a via based motherboard. They have that problem with the live cards.
