when ever I try playing Counter Strike 1.6 on one pc and surf the nett with another the latency on the CS pc goes sky high and I get kicked.

I Have a 1 mBit ADSL line and I play on local (as in Norwegian servers) and I normaly have latency in the range of 5-30 but when we share conenction I have seen as high as 450!!!

I have run a coupple of speed test and when there is just 1 pc online I get just above 1 mBit and when more than one are online I get just below

any ideas any one?

p.s the LAN shares connection true a switch (10/100) and a smotthwall router (linux application) to my ADSL line.

look at the smoothwall router. unless you have a horrific switch, that is the most likely cause. even a 10mbit hub would have better perofomance than that,
so barring a highly unusual hardware problem the switch is not a likely cause.

Unfortunately, I can't help with the linux end of it, but there should be a forum that addresses that, and most likely you can find some help there, if Grogan or one of the other people here who are running a linux firewall can;t help.

Could the firewall to modem connection not be in full duplex mode?

I used to have DSL service, and my 3Com 10 Mb card had a perfect full duplex connection to it. Switched to cable, new RCA cable modem - and this one couldn't keep a good stable FD connect.

Look under the Status page, see if it reports Collisions in the RED interface (eth0 or eth1) that connects to the modem .

Here's what mine looks like now - but I had to sacrifice a 3Comm 100 Mb card to get it with no collisions :(
