prob w/modem?

Hi, I've recently added UD to three PC's. I'm using a motorola Surfboard sb4200 and a d-link router. All of a sudden were starting to loose our signal...happens more & more frequently...I reset the modem, it runs a bit & we loose signal. I was on ebay a minute ago on one PC, after freshly restarting the modem, I tried to leave ebay and have lost signal again. I'll probably have to do the same process here, to answer any replies. It seems like a modem or router prob of some sort, but its got me baffled. Anyone familliar with this type of problem? I'll try to reply to any post immediately, but it may not work, as described before...reconnecting takes about5 mins. Thanks, Bob

Sounds like a problem with the modem itself or the connection. I would call your ISP's tech support and get them to test the connection. I wouldnt bother to tell them you are running a router and more computers behind the router tho. They may get a little upset with you.

Does this problem happen when you disconnect the router and go direct into the surfboard with just the main PC?

I haven't checked that out yet...all is in very tight quarters at the moment, & its a bit harder to snake the wires around, than to just restart the modem--which always cures the problem at least for a while. Also, that's a good idea to call their tech support...they're usually helpful with stuff...plus I guess there is a remote possibility it could be them...not the equip...worked great for quite a while? Thanks for the help.

did you try bypassing the router and trying a direct connection for one of the pcs?

that's what i learned to do first, pat, step-by-step elimination. when that didn't 'fix' it the last time, it turned out my cable was fubar; once replaced, worked fine, so i'd def check that, bob.

Also, when you do a reset:

UNPLUG both the router AND the cable modem.
Plug in the CABLE MODEM first.
WAIT about a minute.
Plug in the power adapter for the router.

IF necessary, reboot the PCs.

Unless there is a bad cable or loose plug or plug being pulled on, that does it for me and my Mom many times.

Hey, Thanks all of you who contributed excellent tests/methods to solve my problem. I tried the bypass router test first...didn't solve the prob, BUT it was the first time that reseting the modem did not fix the problem...me thinks, AH HA, no solution fits all the problems, except a bad primary PC cable (I think Darcy was 1st to nail it). I changed the cable and now all is back to normal. I believe I somehow contorted the cable connector end and corrupted it. Anyhoo...Another job well done...Many Thanks To All, Bob
