Hey all, sorry about all trouble... Umm I know this has probly alrdy been posted. But would someone give me a quick run down on the board recommendation and policy on post images. Plus a couple possible good image host sites i could use. All i did was to use the first image host site that poped from a google search.
Thanks all! ! Slackware ROX's. But it does have issues tho.

There's not really a policy on posting images. (No nerps or genitals though). Those free file hosting sites generally tend to suck because they expose people to advertising crap that's completely beyond your control (and varies... you'll never know what people are going to see).
You could use our gallery here. In the top menu you'll see a drop list called Extras and in that submenu you will see BBF Gallery which leads to our Photopost gallery ( http://www.bitbenderforums.com/photopost/ ). Certainly better than using those file hosting sites.
This is not so great for screenshots, but if the picture is 800 pixels wide or less, you can post it as an attachment in your forum post. (As Zemuss has done)
Or, for a small fee that goes towards paying for the server, you could get your very own web hosting directory here at BBF.

Cats,
May I ask how you got the 8800 working with Linux Mint?
Fingerle
04-13-2008, 06:51 PM
Sure.... Twas easier than expected.
Shut down system.
Pull 8800GT, insert 7300LE
Install Mint..
Run updates.
Install the new Linux driver for the 8800..
Shut down the system, and pull 7300LE and insert 8800GT
Turn on puter.
All set.
All that BS to say I simply used an older video board when I installed and set up Mint. LoL!
[ GK ]
04-13-2008, 06:55 PM
Interesting. I tried that with Ubuntu, but it puked after I put the 8800 in.
Maybe I'll try Mint again...got it right over here somewhere...
Fingerle
04-13-2008, 06:58 PM
With Mint, make sure you install the newer version of Envy before you install the drivers. And use the manual option in Envy.
Version of Envy that ships with mint installs the older "Don't work with the 8800" drivers. your looking to install the nVidia 169.12 version.

Grogan
04-13-2008, 07:24 PM
That's where these so called "easy" distributions leave you cold. Had this been Slackware or something "harder", you'd have gotten your kernel source package installed (e.g. during setup) and gone to Nvidia's web site and gotten the driver and run the installer. You could have gotten that far (to use a web browser and stuff) by simply using the vesa framebuffer X server which it defaults to if you don't run xorgconfig anyways. But oh no... you'd have been exposed to a bit of black screen console stuff and ncurses based menus.
Fingerle

Let's see.... How to reply to that... Hmmmm....

The vesa device is what I got, G. This version (though I think it's the version of X they use) doesn't have the same options when you run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg that the previous version has. Instead you go to the recovery option in the grub menu and you get three options: boot normally, boot to root console or try to reconfigure X. THe last option worked fine, but with my retarded selections during the update I was left with the wrong kernel, so all the 'fixes' were applied to the one I wasn't using. My problems were all my own fault.

The PCLos 2007, and gnome 2008 still ship with the 2.6.22 kernel. Don't play well with my all SATA drives setup.
Getting this "Mini" edition sorted to the point where it's quite usable for me.
All the "toys" in Compiz-Fusion are a trip. :D Just don't see most of these in Ubuntu based distros.
Grogan
08-26-2008, 04:46 PM
2.6.22 on a new distribution? What is the matter with those people?
Mine will be fine with 2.6.22 (at least until I can get a new one in place) with the right drivers turned on, as that's the kernel that was available when I built this 64 bit setup, but that's pretty lame. They could easily use 2.6.26.
Grogan
08-26-2008, 05:12 PM
The PCLos 2007, and gnome 2008 still ship with the 2.6.22 kernel. Don't play well with my all SATA drives setup.
Ohhhh... I think I know what happened there. 2.6.22 itself should be fine on Intel hardware, it's just that they probably built both the old IDE interface in kernel and the new libata interface (possibly as modules) and the old one is the one that initializes the drives when they are both present, and the SATA controllers are in IDE mode. It's too old for modern controllers and there wouldn't even be DMA support.
I had that problem when I first transferred over my 32 bit system to this computer. I didn't know this at first, and I was still using the old IDE driver and performance was terrible. With the controllers still in IDE mode at that time, I built a new kernel with only the libata interface, and the performance problems were solved (using the correct UDMA mode then).
It wasn't long after that that I switched to AHCI, which would make it a moot point because that uses the libata and AHCI driver. So I likely won't see any problem with the PCLos kernels.

Well, I've pretty much got this PCLinuxOS how I want it. It responded admirably to my sexual advances.
It even comes with Sexamp! I used that xmms skin back in the old days, with Mandrake. Nostalgic to see it again.

OK, In case anyone is interested. Here's what I did to install the fish plugin.
(done on Ubuntu-server 8.04 64bit) But should work with most other distros.
First off make sure you have the latest Compiz-Fusion and the CompizConfig Settings Manager installed through your package manager.
1. Open a terminal
2. Make sure you have all the tools to compile the package.
sudo apt-get install compiz-bcop compiz-dev build-essential libtool libglu1-mesa-dev libxss-dev libcairo2-dev git-core
3. Make a directory to put plugin source files.
mkdir ~/compizplugins
4. Change to it.
cd ~/compizplugins
5. get the plugin.
git clone git://anongit.compiz-fusion.org/users/metastability/atlantis2
Almost there, only three steps left...
cd ~/compizplugins/atlantis2
make
sudo make install
(Hopefully you don't get any errors)
Fire up CompizConfig Settings Manager and you should see "Atlantis" listed in the effects section. Enable Atlantis, and go play with your new fishes.

Congrats on getting there with ArchLinux, Sage. That's looking great.
XFCE4 is highly customizable. They've made it all Gnome-like by default in recent versions but you can do a lot with it. All within the settings dialogs and right click/properties menus.
http://www.mikeserv.org/gallery/Mikes-Gallery/xfce4_recent.png.html
I like it more old XFCE style. Things you can't see:
Session manager disabled. What a piece of shit, that serves very little purpose in XFCE. (edit $PREFIX/etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc and comment out the section that loads it and it reverts to the old ways without it)
All the apps I have in the tear off menus
Large panel auto hides
Focus follows mouse
Wrap workspaces at screen edge (so I can slide between virtual desktops with the mouse)
Window transparency (with very low opacity) only when dragging (If I want to see behind it, I just click and drag a pixel or so and hold it, then release when I want it fully opaque again). Title bar transparency (high opacity) always.
sagecss
01-23-2009, 10:27 PM
I must admit that since using Linux I haven't been that happy with the available DE's like Gnome and KDE, and I am not running them down here, but since using XFCE4....mate this thing puts a smile on my dial. I think it is FANTASTIC.
Grogan, are you using a theme with those dark colours and may I enquire as to the icons too...the combo looks really good.
Also, I think you may have shared it before, but could you point me to that background of yours?
Grogan
01-23-2009, 10:36 PM
Yep, you'll have that theme in your XFCE settings. It's called Dusk I think. What those themes actually are, are GTK 2 themes. When XFCE applies that, it applies to all gtk apps. (but only while using XFCE unless you make it your default theme)
The window decoration style is "default 2" I think.
The icons aren't a theme, they are ones that I have changed manually for the launchers. You can have them if you want them. I can put them in a tarball for you.
Here's where I got the wallpaper:

Thanks for the background link Grogan.
Don't hassle with the icons, thanks though.
Tell me, with XFCE, is there a way to have a different background on each desktop? Also, can I manually change the desktop icons?
Grogan
03-24-2009, 02:14 PM
Not with my version of XFCE, no. The desktop background is for all workspaces.
As for the icons, I don't have desktop icons enabled. If you right click on them and do properties or something and there's no way to change the icon, I would guess not. I'd be surprised if you couldn't though, that would be very short sighted. (and they are VERY ugly icons)
sagecss
03-26-2009, 03:10 AM
Ugly they are indeed
Nah, checked the properties thingie and is very limitted...it is probably part of the them, so could probably save the icons I want with the same name as the current theme.
Anyway, it is no big deal...I'll keep fiddling with the critter....thanks.

The folders look stupid, but everything else looks great. I like the "processorator" gauges.
I'm not a huge Gnome fan (but I don't hate it anymore, it's nicer than it used to be) and I've been avoiding anything in Gentoo with dependencies that will cause half of Gnome to get compiled, but I'm probably going to bite the bullet and start a Gnome ebuild today. It'll be nice to see Gnome locally compiled (without having to do any work), and running on a fast system and then Gnome dependencies will be moot because it's already there lol
I'd be interested in having those gauges.

One thing I really don't like is that it's going to put back nspr and xulrunner (mozilla components that I don't want as system libraries because I build my own self contained firefox now)
Oh well, I'm going to pull the trigger.

Well, that all only took 55 minutes and 29 seconds. It was done when I came back from supper. The processor threads were idle much of the time (during the time I was watching it anyway)... this build didn't benefit greatly from 10 make jobs.
Out of the box, it would be quite fugly. The only reason things are already black is because of settings in my .gtkrc-2.0 file in my home directory. I basically just need to change the wallpaper, change the title bars, change the panels around to my liking etc.

I'm gradually building a complete theme for gnome with this. It's taking FAR longer than expected and I'm not going right into the guts of it yet :ono: there's just SO FRIKKEN MANY possible things in here to play with!
On the plus side, I discovered I was running two different nvidia driver versions and have got that sorted out after managing to crash my entire desktop with all the goofing off I'm doing.

Well, I had to do it. I tried a bunch of others (KDE 4.3.3 almost made it, if not for the bloat and obscene memory wastage. It even performs very well, but no fucking desktop is getting away with that on my system. Sorry KDE), but XFCE is still the one for me. Now I am whole again. I need access to everything quickly (from panel launchers and tear off menus), and the ability to spread it all out across many desktops and quickly navigate between them.
Guess what I made it look like? The fucking same as I always do :roflmao:

I'm working on a Victorian England/Steampunk concept which should eventually include things like moving brass gears for the window spinner and a polished brass look for the windows decorator (perhaps) but it will take a while yet to work it all out.

Mate, I can't remember off hand. I have broken down my OS to make a few changes to my partition structure and to redo my OS again for a bit more practice with the Arch setup ...so can't look right now, but when it is up again I will let you know straight away.
I think the icon theme was BlackWhite-III.
Check out gnome-look.org under the gtk2 listings for a number of dark themes and under the icon listings for many available icon sets.
I will get back to you on this ASAP though.

I am struggling to change the black font for unselected buttons and menu items. If I can't get this sorted I will ditch this, as it annoys the crap out of me. The rest is pleasant though. I must learn to customize/create my own themes anyway.
The icon set used is LaGaDesk-BlackWhite-III-Icons.
The theme is Black-Diamond, which I customized slightly on the colours tab.
The window border is - glossy. I can't recall now but will confirm if this is a default border or if it is part of the gtk-murrine-engine. I will try to recreate this theme on my newly installed partition to confirm.
Application font: Sans Bold 11
Document font: Sans 11
Desktop font: Sans 11
Windows title font: Sans Bold 12
Fixed width font: Monospace 11
I have best shapes selected.

You might be fighting on the wrong front. A lot of the custom themes depend on the default themes for stuff that they don't implicitly define. ie if your theme doesn't define a specific trash can, then it will use the one from the theme it references. It's the same for folders, icons, menu backgrounds, the lot. Mine is still unfinished, but I ran out of enthusiasm and free time as uni starts back on Monday.
