I have installed a new card for cable where it used to be only dial-up. I'm in the process of upgrading what I can offline. Does anybody have any helpful tips etc. for making the change? So far, everything looks good, but I have not plugged the cable in. :)

You will need to PLUG-IN the cable, when You install the cable ISP's software,to make the setting's right.

I already downloaded the disk for the card. I'm ready with the cable CD, but do you think I'll need to do the same with the router disk? Thanks James, Bob Jr. :)

if you're plugging into a router, then you shouldn;t need to do anything on the pc.
you would only need the isp disk for a direct connection to the cablemodem.
Or if there are any special mail programs needed to access the isp's mail service.

W98SE will install the nic, and any supplied drivers if needed for the network card. All you need do then is to check the properties.

right click network neighborhood, select properties. It will show your modem, the network card and further down the list, you will see tcpip for the network card. highlight that, click properties, and verify on the first panel it has obtain IP address automatically.
if not, click it on. click ok to apply. if you changed it, you will need to reboot.
After that, plug in cable, go to windows update and get all the latest updates!

No TS,The router will need to be configured by You or a wizard, when You install It's software!

That should probably be done before,You install the ISP's software ;)

But the cable modem, should still be connected and powered up!

EDIT:Tom just stepped on My reply!

I would listen to Him :D

ooops, sorry James. But you have another reply don;t you??? :D

I know he has an already setup network with a few pc's on it. it's working, so you don;t need to do anything to the pc being plugged into the router.

I am on my second try, but I keep getting an error message about a connection wizard, or else I get the page can not be displayed screen. I'm on my second reboot now, I'll post my results.

ok, you may have some leftoverstuff from the dialup settings....

please follow this carefully. don;t get sidetracked on these menus.

click start, settings, control panel.

click on internet options.
go to connections tab
(now as much as I hate wizards, we can use the setup button on the top).
Click setup.
select the last option, setup manually or lan connection
next
select I connect thru a lan, next..
leave the check on automatically discover etc....
next
click finish.

See if that works. you may have a default setting of dial a connection still in place, that is the easiest way to reset it.

if that doesn;t work, , make sure the cable is plugged in!!! you should have lights on the router where you plugged it in and usually 2 lights on the nic card.

It's not working, but I also do not have the 1 light on my router, or the two on my card. I was sure I got the card seated properly, but could that be the problem? Thanks TS

the card is a possibility. Are you sure the cable is good?

how many ports is your router? some routers, say a 4 port for arguments sake, have 6 slots, one to go to the cablemodem, usually labeled wan, 4 ports for pc's, and one of those ports, port 1 on a linksys befrs41, is still port 1, but wired as a crossover port
to go to a switch or hub, and if you have a pc in port 1, you can;t use it.

Assuming you have a normal open port:
1. Move a cable from another machine into that port. verify the lights com back on as expected.
2. if that works, (port on router is ok) try that cable plugged into the non working machine, see if the lights come on. if so, you have a bad cable.
3. if still no joy, reseat the network card, and try with the known good cable in a known good port. if it still doesn;t work, the card may be dead.

normally you will get the link led, and the 100 speed led on both the router and the card. Which router is it btw, and what card (if known)?

I just moved the card to a different slot, and my system detects the card and lights are on as they should be, but I am still having trouble establishing a connection. Does anybody have any ideas?

Just a thought but have tried rebooting the router. I know for cable modem that if you plug things in, inthe wrong order you have to reboot the modem in order for it to pick up its ip adress.

I think for me the process is:

1. connect cable modem to cable line & wait for it to show the correct lights.

2. Wait aprox 30sec and then plug the router to the cable modem.

Just a thought

Thanks Jimbo, I tried it and still can't get online. I finally got the right card driver and installed it, but still can't create a connection. The PC IDs the card, and says it is installed and up to date. The only prob I can think of is that during one attempt to connect I got an error 1F6 message, but I'm not sure what it means. I guess I'll just press on. I do appreciate the tip though. Thanks Again, TS:)

Try removing all the devices from network neightborhood properties. everything. shutdown, reboot, and let it add the NIC back in. you will need the w98 cd, it will need access to the cab files ot rebuild. As before, keep any newer files.

After that, check tcpip properties for the nic card see lst paragraph of reply #4. verify it is set right.

If it still doesn;t work, then try the setup as in reply #9.

Remember what I told ya in chat, w98 has a nasty habit of remembering every nic card you ever plugged in, and it keeps using the same settings from one to the next.
Best at this point ot clean everything out and start fresh in network.
if you share folders between pc's, you will at some point have to add file and print sharing to network properties. on the properties page, click add, then service then file and print sharing for microsoft networks. then click on i want to share files and printers, if you want this machine to share it's attached printer if any click the second line for that. Ithink it defaults to both.

I was trying to follow TJM's instructions, but accidentally put in the wrong disk. Now it is forcing me to enter the product code, and the code with the disk, which worked fine this morning, doesn't work now. I can't even reboot without a #. What can I do to correct this? I think I could get somewhere if I could get it to boot from disk, but have had no luck doing that either.
Thank You, TS

Watson, I believe this to be a 3 pipe problem. It's after midnight, letting you guys know I'm about to get on the phone with bob and see what we can do.
