With the recent news that Apple will be going with Intel Processors in future Macs, would you be interested in purchasing a Macintosh Computer?
I definately was happy to hear Apple is going to be using x86 architecture. This will help the Mac become more compatible with x86 software. Combine this with Apple's Tiger OS X which is so much more elegant then Windows, and I can wait to get my hands on one of these computers.

No, I'll probably stick with Linux on cheap PC hardware.

Too early in development and i've got enough paperweights laying around. maybe in a few years if they offer them at a reasonable price (which is doubtful)

I gotta be honest, I know very little about Macs.
I've used one a few times, seemed OK.
From what I understand though, graphics people favour them - why?
And also they're very overpriced for the processing power they offer.
I'm kinda not in favour of them, but I don't really feel qualified enough to comment.

I've considered Mac's for some time, but they have been highly priced for the horsepower. Perhaps the switch to Intel will bring them down a bit. For now, it's wait and see for me.

For now mac on x86 is just one step beyond vaporware.
Tiger OS X which is so much more elegant then Windows
Sure it is, and it is a lot more secure too, but so far that's on the PPC architecture. Will it port 100% to x86 or will something get lost along the way?
Apple is becoming famous for DRM, and that is not where I really want to go. As far as the retail price goes I doubt that it will be able to compete with dell.
The final negative is paying for software beyond the cost of the OS.
Don't count on your windows apps running in OSX, which means buying them from apple, or some other 3rd party. That is if apple doesn't bring a law suite against them. This has happened before.
Of course you could always install the windows OS in the mac x86 so they say, but why run windows on a mac?
Bottom line: until it is out of the vaporware stage, and on the retail shelf it's to early to say.

in the early day's flops they had way better graphics, and resolution than the pc, but that era is over and they have been left in the dust actually. People that still hold onto this farce don't keep up with technology, and are afraid to try new things.
on a side note, reguardles is x86, or PPC mac's will remain priporitary to certian extreme's. They have admited this, OSX for the x86 will NOT be able and/or allowed (until someone patches it) to run on any other x86 platform.
This priporitary concept be it hardware or software eventually will be the destruction of macintosh, unless they change. They were rescued from the dung heap once, by a company with the same belief system of forcing people to use their products. That company is located in redmond, washington.
However Apple will deny this wholeheartedly.

Linux works just fine for me. Lots of elegance too if you want it.
Linux just works and at a great price.

Thanks for that, b, I suspected as much cos every Mac I seen doesn't really look any better to me than a good CRT Monitor being fed Windows or Linux.

I agree with Grogan. Only + with mac's is design (maybe that was too cruel).

I have very little experience with them. For the retail buyer they are the only real alternative to a Windoz based pc machine. I hear no complaints from Mac users. They like what they have and it does what they want. They have come back more than once and more power to them. I doubt that I will be buying one but it good to have options out there.
From what I understand though, graphics people favour them - why?
In the 80s and 90s publishing houses really like them and that is all you would see in their offices. They had a gui interface, great software with wysiwyg and most of all, the monitor was taller than wide, like the print page they were working on. That reputation has lived on. Nowadays they are probably nobetter or maybe not even as good is somecases.
The pc was still dos based and crude in comparision.

Personally I just like the cosmetic look of the MAC laptops. Other from that They are too expensive for my taste.

They're here now. (http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/6734042/wo/rWDwauH16x1e3u8mDwJ1NrDFYBj/0.PSLID?mco=899BECBF&nclm=iMac)
Not as pricy as expected, they look sexy as hell, and the processing power is respectable, if not mind-blowing.
And, should you desire, you can run Windows on it.
And you'll need better speakers.
But yes, if I had some excess cash laying about, I'd consider getting one now :taped:
