    Windows XP Boot Disk

Microsoft has released the long awaited Windows XP Boot Disk. The Windows XP startup disk allows computers without a bootable CD-ROM to perform a new installation of the operating system. The Windows XP startup disk will automatically load the correct drivers to gain access to the CD-ROM drive and start a new installation of Setup. You cannot upgrade from a Windows XP startup disk.

Windows XP Home Edition startup disks will not work for Windows XP Professional installations and vice-versa.

Sod that ... if you already have an OS and pop XP into your CD drive it asks you whether you would like to "upgrade or clean install" and they both work faultlessly.

    Six disks ...

Why does it need 6 start up discs for, tell me if I'm missing something, but all it should need is the cd-rom drivers, then the XP cd-rom should take over from there!!
That was my thought. I still havent had the time to make the 4 needed to do the install for Win2K but am thinkng I might just do a upgrade.

dunno should I do clean install or upgrade of win2K?

If you have nothing to loose ... always do a clean install.

can you upgrade from 98se?, i have tried it and i have the pop-up screen , so does it work?, and just b/c i'm wondering can you do the upgrade from 95?, i'm just asking b/c a professor of mine who knows my rep for having programs asked me if it wouldn't be too much trouble if he could have a copy of xp, considering that i have 1 lab outstanding on him, which he could give me a zero on if he really wanted, i offered, hell i'd make him a copy of anything he wants, but he asked not me , will hand in report with cd, but just wondering so that it doesn't turn into a nightmare for him therefore unleashing his wrath on me lurch

Lurch, 98 & 98se are a go for XP, 95 is not an option. You could do a clean install over 95 if you have a 98 cd handy, that is the only way to accomplish an upgrade to XP.

    ohhh Sorry Al ... but

yes you can do a "clean install" over win95 but XP will not "upgrade" from win95.

Just pop the XP CD in and it will Auto Run with a recomandation for a clean install.

Mucks, thanks for setting me straight. I was either misinformed or didn't interpret the wording from MS correct. ( not the 1st time) Apologies to all.

    AL

    No apologies needed.

MS & Intel have very poor quarter returns and as such need you to BUY, BUY and buy new products to try and lift them out of the rut.

And XP does work quite well with 64mb Ram (but think 486 here) but as memory is so cheap, at the moment, you can afford to give XP 512mb and still have change of a pony (that's a £50, is that right Flops)

Oh, AVG the free antivirus programme I've been touting does indeed work with XP ... just ignore the error message ... no problems yet.
