Very rarely do I upgrade the video on my existing system. But I do try to get a decent card that can handle most of the applications when I build a new system.
Whenever my old one dies
Whenever my old one becomes horribly obsolete
Whenever my old becomes somewhat old
I only upgrade to impress the ladies
Whenever the color scheme in my glass case becomes boring
Very rarely do I upgrade the video on my existing system. But I do try to get a decent card that can handle most of the applications when I build a new system.

Dude, check out my DVD Collection!
IA's (temporarily IC's) rule of stingy thumb says I never spend more then $200 on a video card. I don't believe in spending more mula for a freaking video card then a CPU. That's nuts.
Thus, I never am with the latest and greatest. Usually a step lower but that's fine with me, I'm not that big into the gaming scene. At the moment, I still be using my ELSA Gladiac Geforce2 which I got for only $127 about a year ago. Those babies were going for over $200 back then.

Damn, I got the same card from the compu show a year back. Paid the same price too. Hmmm.....
S'funny, I just upgraded mine. Went for a better card mostly so some games would work with XP.
I'm with The metalasian DJ gourmet long time wubber on this one though. Damned if I'm gonna fork out £300.00 for a Geoforce three when I know in 3 to 6 months it'll probably cost only about £150.00.
That Radeon 8500 is tempting though.....
Generally I dont upgrade unless I get a new kick ass game and it looks like crap. Only had to do that once. Now whenever I build a new system I usually get one generation behind the top of the line. right now that for me means Geforce2's of some flavor or variety.

I still have a Creative Blaster Riva TNT.
So does that answer your Question? LOL

I upgrade, only when i need a new card. I bought my Radeon AIW not because my TNT2 Ultra was long in the tooth; but becasue i wanted a card that would do both DVD with AC-3 and have a TV tuner on it. The boost in graphics performance was only an extra.
I say buy only when you actually need it, and when you do buy, it plans to think just a little ahead.![]()
as little as possible, they're expensive little b*stards !
Seriously though I only tend to upgrade when its really struggling. My last two vid card upgrades were back in about June 2000 when I bought a TNT2 M64 (when my 3DFX Voodoo 1 died and I needed to play UT on something better than my Mystique220) and in something of an aberration for me I replaced that with a Geforce 256 DDR in August that year, not because the M64 wasnt cutting it, far from it. It was done because my Dad decided to upgrade his PC by letting me buy myself better stuff (with his VISA) and then he had my old kit. For old hardware lovers out there (CC ?) I just thought I'd mention that bith the M64 and the Mystique are both alive and well (the M64 is living in my brothers gf's machine and the Mystique is currently unemployed until such time as I get another monitor so I can go multi again)
Wow... that was a bit random wasnt it ?

Mabee an amendmant to your title is needed.
'Babbling Insomniac Stresshead' ?????
What do you think :p
Hardly ever - when I build a box, I usually put a middle of the road card in it, and that usually lasts the life time of the box.
But I have just recently bought a new 3D card specifically to replace a card in one of my boxes for gaming purposes, but I do hope this isn't the start of the slippery slope to gaming madness where people buy horrifically expensive graphics cards every 6 months to eek out every last frame rate.....

Hehe Flopps, I very nearly commented on the same, but then I thought what else Karak might have meant, making up names/stories.....But, then again Karak might have let something slip :spinner:![]()
It's something to do with the fact that Rouges actually is a kind of make-up. The word i'm looking for is Rogues apparantly.
Hang on; i'll check this out now......
.... yes it's true.
Who ever gave me my title either had a really dry sense of humor or didn't think to check on this. But then agian who would. I shall now change my title, seeing as i now have over 400 posts.
Glad we cleared that one up then....
As for the title..... that one bestowed upon you by Uncle Bits I do believe. Something about Texans and their own peculiar brand of spelling methinks. If it ain't spelt 'y'all' I fink they get's a bit lost....
Goddamm, I gone done taken the piss out of the CTO, great bolts of lightnin' shall now fall from above...![]()
I generally buy a "new" video card with each system I build, so about once a year or so. But the only time I ever bought a top of the line video card was right after the first Geforce card came out and I will building a 500mhz celeron system.
There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.
At first, I upgraded when it was Horriably obsolete.
This last upgrade was from a Voodoo 3 3500 to a Geforce 2 pro.. so it wasnt horriably obsolete yet.
I generally wait til I start noticing the slowness, then I hint at the wife I need another
I was happy with my diamond voodoo1. Ran everything fine up to and including max payne. Then I got Mechwarrior4 from MicrosHITZ. Damn thing doesnt even install untill it detects at least 16 megs video ram.
Ran out to get a geforce2mx, but it wouldnt run properly in my K62 system, so I took it back.
Got a radeon 32meg DDR and installed myself in the store so I could make sure it worked. Been happy ever since.
Except for the numerous bug fixes in the drivers that is. Seems like they have to put out a new driver revision for each game that comes out.
I am cheap, until now. I do belive I want to spend the money now to get the best I can get my hands on, G4. I have always run hoplessly outdated video until less than one year ago when I got an annihilator MX, and I am happy as a clam. I had 2 other cards, Oak tech isa card and a diamond stealth card. well that is until I had this explosion of stray computers![]()

And, isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, oooh, oooh, oooh, the sky is the limit.

You ran Max Payne on a Voodoo 1?
Well, I'm gobsmacked.
I still got a Voodoo 1 card running alongside a Matrox Mystique 4MB card in a 586 100Mhz system, sitting in the attic, gathering dust.
Still trying to make up my mind whether it's worth getting an ISA Modem to run UD on it.![]()
Let me know if a P100 is any good for UD. Got one here I could slap together and put on the broadband network.
bump, i'd like to know too, is a 100mhz worth it, sinc. lurch
I took a look inside the 586/100 and it actually has 4 PCI slots, 2 being used by the MatroxMystique/Voodoo 1.
So I took an internal PCI Modem out of one of my other rigs to try it out. As you all probably know by now, I'm using AOL.
AOL just wouldn't load, said the specs weren't high enough, or words to that effect.
I'll probably try another ISP soon, I'll keep you posted.
Matrox Mystique 4MB, man that was a sweet card. Next card I got was the Diamond Stealth II G460 8MB card, has the "awesome" Intel740 chip. Then finally the current GF2 MX 32MB card! Don't want to spend too much on the graphics front though. I read GF3 cards have pretty decent MPEG and 2D decoding, so maybe when the GF4 comes out, and I save up enough for a new mobo (MSI K7T266 Pro2-RU), I'll get one of them GF3 Ti200 are something. But at the rate I'm going ($35 budget/month), it'll be the ice age again before I have money for the components...
AS... I know the feeling. I'd love to have the cash to do something serious to my system (its been a while!) but my poor ass uni budget just wont allow.
I upgrade when the cost is justified...
and the product will be improved.

A P100 is worth it Prod. It won't return many results but it will return them nonetheless!
$127 Elsa Gladica GTS2 a year ago...$127 Radeon 8500 this year
Who Yo Daddy![]()
I upgraded to a 64MB card,I felt the graphics might be slowing down my system.Of course I upgraded the mobo and all the other stuff too.It is better, but until I get cable out here,it really kills everything.Wouldn't matter what I had,it's the damn obsolete phone lines :-( ,Tuffie

I have the Matrox G400 32 MB Dual Head installed. Since I bought it almost 2 years back I have upgraded the Bios 5 times and my drivers are the latest WHQL certified. Everything seems to be working fine even my 12 year old son seems satisfied with flying his Jane's USAF and driving around Porche (Unleased).
I bought this card mainly for its excellent rendition of 2D graphics, but it turned out that its performance in all the departments is better than what I expected.
I have no reason to upgrade in the near future.
I was thinking of making the world black and white, than I thought.....NAAAH! - GOD
I would wait until it dies, hasn't happened yet, lucky I guess.![]()

Have two GeForce 2's one GTS and one MX, don't play that many games, and I have no complaints. If you check the reviews, the GF4's aren't that much better than the GF3's. I might be waiting on the GF5's before I upgrade. Like IA, I'm not spending MB/CPU combo money for the latest and greatest.
My Asus 7700 Delux is fine for what I do, watch TV or a DVD, and surf the net at the same time. Just have two windows open at the same time. But I do get a BSOD when I try to watch TV, a DVD, and surf, so there could be some improvement.
The only thing better than playing the game, is talking about it.
I guess I’m like most everybody here, trailing about a year behind in video technology.
I’m happy with a GF-2MX/400 in my games computer, and a GF-2MX/200 in Rose’s (my wife). Had a TNT2 Ultra before that (Diamond Viper V770), still got it in a PII-400 system that’s waiting for a HDD.
I can’t see justifying the cost of the latest technology, not on the income I make. If I were a rich man though . . . :joy:
It is harder and harder to make a case to a weary and dismayed population that the Western way of life as managed by the Anglosphere ought to be spread around the world at the point of a gun.
