Can you imagine if you were working at the World Trade Center/Pentagon or catching the flight but for some reason today, was running behind schedule???

I am totally affected by what has happened, I can not imagine what those people are going through and the people who were directly affected.

I imagine the terrorists must have had "inside help" to acheive this.

Still in a total state of shock...

I understand you IA. There are genrally two feelings about this incident, one of disgust and sadness, and another of bewildement and disbelief. I fall into the second catagory, this is something that is still can' graps and so the human tradegy hasn't really struke me yet. It's like watchig a movie. I'm sure many people are feeling the same which is why they are apparantly more concerned with explaining what happened and the financial and security issues raised rather that the loss of life. This isn't because they don't appreciate it or are indifferent, it's because they haven't yet proccessed what has happened today. So long as we all under stand this we shouldn't have any miss-understanding over apparent lack of compassion.

    perplexed Completely devastated

Like many of you, I'm completely shocked at what has happened to our country today. I'm still trying to get a grip on the scope and gravity of the situation, and to tell you the truth, I am very scared and anxious about what is to come next.

We see this kind of thing glamorized in movies all the time, but when it happens for real you soon realize that there is nothing glamorous about it. This is the worst terrorist attack in American history. I hope that any of you who had friends or family in NY have gotten in contact with them or will be able to.

As soon as it is evident who exactly is responsible for this tragedy, the U.S. will retaliate against them. With an attact of this magnitude it is almost feasible to think that we could be looking at a possible WWIII, depending on what action the U.S. decides to take. Again, this is a very scary time for, and I'm sure everyone is going to be directly or indirectly affected by this for quite some time.

there have now been reports of explosions and fire in the Afgahn capitol of Kabul
There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

Yup, at the moment there are unconfirmed reports that there have been US missle attacks on Afganistan.

Personally i think it is probably too early for a retaliation. The US should wait until the wholw western world is ready to make a big effort rather than a few missle strikes. But then again, revenge is very important at times like this. Think of the B29 strikes against Tokyo and the rag tag fleet asembled to sink the Bismark

Whew. Cannot actually quite believe this thing. My first words 'bad news' seem a little like an understatement and insignificant now. I just caught that news as I was off to do some work. I was working in the shadhow of Canary Wharf, a large skyscraper in East London which was evacuated following the events in the USA. I was keeping my fingers crossed.

Apart from the plane that crashed or was 'brought down' in Pittsburgh, I've heard reports that at least one other plane had been hijacked, but no other reports were heard about it. There's speculation that the American Air Force had to bring that Civillian plane down to minimise ground casualties. If that is true can you imagine how the poor fighter pilot felt?

This whole thing beggars belief. Watching the newsreel footage, people waving from the top of the damaged buildings, brought me close to tears. Well, alright, tears.

I hope Dramen's OK. Would be good to hear from him, but I expect all forms of Internet communication from New York are probably not performing too well at the moment.

And we haven't heard from James, but he lives in Staten Island so hopefully he's OK.

Those of you who know me will probably know I have quite a pacifist nature, but if the perpetrators of this act of war are identified I personally would have no problem nuking the bastards. Seriously. And if that happened, to hell with world opinion. I know our PM Tony Blair has vowed to stand shoulder to shoulder with the States with any retalitory action taken. That's maybe a gut reaction but this thing has made me think different.

I really hope the USA manage to exact some revenge over this. That's not a humanist thing I know, but, oh, I really really feel like hurting someone for all the suffering.

To all you guys in America, my sincere heartfelt sympathy.

And today is my twin daughter's 13th birthdays. This is one birthday I'll never forget.

    Keep the strength guys.

I know the murder of one individual is a terriable act and the countless people who lost their lives today is disgusting but I just thought I would try and give a little more info on the number of people involved in todays events.

I was watching a report from the Director of the WTC and he says that there would have been around 25,000 people at the most inside the towers. There are 50,000 employes but the towers only have around 20,000 in at any one time (10,000 in each tower) there are also around another 5,000 visitors making the total 25,000.

My girlfriends uncle was on business near the tower when it all happened. He saw the towers fall and from what he says and talking to my friend who is a structural engineer, it appears to be the side of the second tower that fell away causing the rest to follow and with the other (first hit tower) the weight of the top and mast was enough to cause a chainreaction. As the top fell it gained speed and mass causing the rest of the building to fall.

I have also read that the towers were desighed to stand the impact of a jet plane and survive. However, the planes used were far beyond the design limits.

As I said before, this is not about numbers and what I have wrote is only what I have read or have on good authority.

I hope we can all pull together and help where it is needed.

I just found this ... and I hope to God its not true ...
"In the City of God there will be a great thunder, Two brothers torn apart by Chaos, while the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb" , "The third big war will begin when the big city is burning" - Nostradamus 1654.
Tell me this is not true ...

    EDIT
If someone would give me the century and quatrain I would post the original French version.
Right off I'm not believing it's even a real Nostradamus quatrain. In 3 books I looked up, War, Third World War, New City, end of the world and New York and none of them were this alleged quatrain, or even anything close that could be translated into it.

Another thing. Nostradamus wrote in four (quatrain=quatre=four) stanza's. By the quotes I count three here. By the dots (which he didn't use) I count six. Neither of those numbers is four.

Out of fear of death for being a Witch, he did not give precise dates like that much. Of the very few times he did they are very picked apart and easy to pick out of the books.

Until someone can come up with something I can check (the quatrain and century) without having to go through nearly 1000 of his predictions I'm inclined to write this one off as an internet hoax. It's just too full of things made to sound like they are his but too jumbled up to be his (City of God, New City, Big City would be 3 different places the way he wrote, unless he was talking of 3 places they wouldn't be used to describe the same place).

Michael Nostradamus was born December 15, 1503, died in 1566. According to that "quote" he made it 88 years after he was dead, now that truly is a feat of wonder.

I'm way too emotional right now to read anything here or say much at this point. My 80 year old mother watched this from her living room window today. I couldn't get in touch until a feew moments ago. I have several relatives that work in downtown next to the trade center. 5 of my cousins are stuck there unable to get home. 1 is unaccounted for as of this time. Lets all pray.

    Plane that was shot down

It is speculated that the reason the 747 was shot down was that it was headed for a chemical/biological weapons storage facility.

The "Blue Delta" authorization was given, and the plane was shot down, lest it find it's way to that facility. These are standing orders for the military whenever unauthorized airccraft approach either nuclear or chem/Bio storage facilities.

I too, wonder just what tomrrow will bring. While I don't expect an attack in the same manner, I do expect an offront from a different direction.

Nostradamus made that quote 700+ years ago. I was wondering if it was still going to come true. I hope it hasn't. If it is, millions will die, and this is just the begginning.

    May god guide us all

Reports are coming in that their are people still alive under all the rubble. They are using cell phones to contact authorities. I hope we are able to save as many as we can.

Reports from the Pentagon crash are saying 800 people are dead

The extent of the deceased will not be know for days. A friend of mine who worked 4 blocks away from the WTC said he saw people jumping out of the buildings or clinging onto the side concretes and trying to slide down. He also saw body parts strewn all over.

Thanks to all our overseas members for showing their support in this dire times for our nation...we stand united in our preseverance and rejection of the very evil which usurps our freedom.

    Dramen,

Deeply sadden to hear about the current status of your relatives. We all hope you and your family can get through this terrible incident. Prayers.

    Best Regards

    Supafly,

Man, that is freaky. But with the military security tighten up after today's incident, hopefully, this horrific tragedy won't reiterate.

Just checking in. Dramen, the wife & I are hoping the family are OK. Hectic day here, our son-in-law was in the air when things went down, took awhile to track him down. He usually flies out of Pittsburgh and with the crash, there wasn't a lot of info being released at first so our household was a mess He ended up in Chicago & is on his way home now. To anyone else out there with friends, or relatives involved in this horrific day, our prayers are with you.

Thanks to all for your kind words and concern. I believe all is well, everyone is accounted for though we are still unsure about one. But that we believe it is a communication thing at this point.

I have a huge family that originates from NYC and sometimes we lose track of each other over time. Anyway, relatives from florida and vegas that have better knowlege of him, haven't had any bad news, so we do believe all is well. Needless to say I have been quite emotional thru the day, mostly because of the inability to communicate even tho I am only 100 miles from NYC. Its been a real drainer.

On a side note, It amazes me that I sit here and can use my computer to communicate but was unable to place simple phone calls to the NYC today! I wish some of my family would get wired!

This is such a sad and upsetting day for the world and for many reasons. I feel so very sad for all those children and families that won't have their mom or dad coming home today.

Once again, I thank you personally for your concerns and I will say my prayers for all those who were not as fortunate as my family.

Bob and lurch I know you guys live there on SI and this is where my mom is, she has an apartment in Rosebank which is on the waterfront. Its an 11 story building and she has a window that overlooks the narrows and the city. She told me that in all her 80 years she never dreamed that she would look out her window and see something like that. I am glad you guys and family are OK. I worked for several years right on the floor of the American Stock Exchange, I remember when digging for the WTC first started...this is just unbelievable, the picture of that jet colliding with the building seem surreal, like from a staged "Disaster Movie"
    Sadly, this is real.

    Thanx all

The Boston Herald is reportedly indicating the veracity of the initial reports the terrorists were using knives and razorblades to take over the plane. It is being reported the terrorists were killing the flight attendants in order to lure the pilots out of the cockpits and thus eventually gaining access to the cockpits where they took over the plane.

There are reports that the FBI or government agencies have seized several arabic flight operators manual which may have been used by the perpetrators.

It is also reported the 4th plane which crashed in PA was potentially brought down by several passengers, one of which called his spouse to say he knew the plane was headed for some signficant area and they were all going to die. He told his wife that he knew he was going to die but he was going to do something about by confronting the terrorists with help of others.

If the above is true, although this is purely in hindsight, only IF the pilots stayed in their cockpits and not open the locked door, the tragedy or at the very least the magnitude could have been avoided. This is a very sad attempt to rationalize the situation at hand...the tragedy will forever stain the very roots of my life.

Again...this hasn't been confirmed yet, you can read more of the story HERE

nite Beezer, and give god a thanks that your family is ok. Looks like I won't be sleeping just yet, too much coffee and cigarettes. I went out for a walk in our courtyard for some air, damn room is filled with billowing clouds from chainsmoking, and looked up at the sky which is normally heavy with air traffic. Not a single plane and it was so quite, very freaky like that old move "The Day The Earth Stood Still".

sorry that i have not been able to check in until now, i just have been too distraught, this morning when i was in the shower my younger brother told me that a plane had hit the world trade center, thinking back to the 40's when the B-25 bomber hit the empire state building, i thought that maybe some small aircraft had hit one of the buildings, as i finished my shower, i walked downstairs still in my towel, as i saw what was on the television i was horrified, as i sat there and they reported, thinking about the people lost and the damage done the buildings collapses before my eyes, even the reporters where next to speechless, my brother, beezer works within an earshot of there and one of my best friends works for myrill lynch in the towers, thinking the worst i began at the phone trying to call people, the phones where so jammed that you could only get a dial tone one every ten minutes, luckily my brother came home and my friend called, as it turns out he is now a walking ghost as far as i am concerned, becuase he was scheduled to have a meeting on the 90th floor of the tower with the antenna that was hit high and first, his meeting was at 8am, but he missed his ferry boat becuase he decided to shine his shoes today, i thank God that my brother, my friend and my neighbors wife who also works right there all managed to escape, i can only pray for those who are unspoken for, and my prayers are there for you dramen, i hope that your loved ones are ok, and i pray for the best for tommorow, today i have felt so lost and without control, i don't know today i have spent the entire day cleaning as to gain a sense of control over something i guess, thank you all for your support out there, as horrible as i feel watching it live from a television, i can only imagine the horror of those who were there, i feel like crap , but i wish to go on, i hope that you don't mind, someone was talking about secondary charges at the base, ia i believe, well this "appears" not to be the case, from what analysts can come up with, the intense blow of the second aircraft weakened the stucture, then the flames from the fuel weakened any remaining stucture, it then buckled and collapsed, while its initial velocity was slow that ten feet of falling with the weight of all of the other floors remaining on top brought down each floor below with increasing speed and momentum from the added mass of the crumbled floors, the design of these towers was such that they gained support from each other at the base, now when the first tower fell, this lack of support along with the previous strike was great enough to start the same chain reactino and bring down that building, i don't know i guess that i should go to sleep now, my damn district principle has decided to keep school open so aparently i have work in a couple of hours, i will pray for dramen's family and all of those who have family who are not yet accounted for, i will pray for those who have lost their lives, i also want to thank all of the fireman and police who without hesitation worked so hard to save lives which caused them to lose their own when the buildings came toppling down, and while i would really like to hate right now, i will pray for our enemies who have blinded themselves beyond the goodness that even exists in their own religion, good night everyone, hopefully tommorow will be better, lurch

I haven't been around lately on the web, but I wish to offer my condolences to those affected and especially those with casualties of the attack. I made calls around to all my friends and relatives and so far none are in the area. One, I can't reach, but I think he's in Chicago on business. I had one friend who was to have had dinner in the building, but the attack happpened before his flight from Washington.

I've read all the comments and concur with everyone, but I think we should wait until the investigations are concluded to affix blame. This is the cornerstone of the US judicial system and constitution. There is always time for retribution, after we are sure of the conspiritors. The Guardian (a UK newspaper) summed it up quite well, the link is:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/wtccrash/s...550390,00.html

Hope that came out as the link is so long. Keep the faith, we as a society are stronger than our enemies and better; our European brothers included. It is a shame that some people pervert religion to include viloence against others.

Your wish has been enacted, my friend.

I have created a specific forum to pay tribute to those lives lost and affected by yesterday's tragedy.

The aftermath is still too much for me to bear.

thanks IA, it seemed a little weird having this thread alongside the more light-hearted content that normally resides in the "Villiage Idiot"

I've been checking on the news where I can today but havent heard anything more significant. Apparantly they've managed to rescue around 8 people from the rubble of the WTC but I don't know how concrete that info is.

as another suggestion would you consider re-naming the trading forum ? I think the current name might cause some confusion or might be taken the wrong way..

thanks for the links IA, some of my regular news sites (including the BBC) are still having traffic issues which is a little frustrating. I stumbled across WashingtonPost.com earlier today and was quite impressed although some of the links appeared to be a bit dodgy when I tried.

EDIT: www.google.com has got links to a load of sites and has also got cached copies of some of the troubled sites.

Good morning all... well afternoon is more like it. Since Mayor Giuliani doesn't want anyone who work's below 14th St. to come into the city today.. I'm stuck home. Well I finally fell asleep, out of sheer exhaustion. I look out my window and see life move on as it did for the past 23 years of my life, and yet there is the knowledge of the tragedy that happened yesterday. I'm still thinking about it, and don't know what to think. I guess I have nothing insightful to post right now, just needed to post something to give me an out. So I'm off to the store to pick up the paper, be back soon.
