    Webspace - image hosting ?

Are there any sites for free webspace that do not automatically assign you a homepage using your "real" name? I keep running into this problem.

I just logged on to Geocities today. That seemed to work with my "alias" account name. So far so good.

    I don't understand the Create a Homepage.
I just want a place to host photos that I can later place/post/email anywhere.
(I don't want to put them "on the www".)
Just a place where I can keep them until I want to use them.

MUST I create a Homepage to do this?
    This is driving me nuts.

    Thanks.

at least what i did was to just make a crap page with a wizard in two seconds, then i upload the files and download them as i wish, also then you can just give a url to someone who you want to give a file to w/out giving them access to any of your other stuff, as for hosting pics, most places have a script to block that , so you can't do it, all that you get is a pick of goecitites anglefire blah blah blah, i have a friend with a server so i host from my site and there is no blocking, if you have something you want to put in your sig, i can host it, from what the guys tell me its not causing much traffic on my friends pc, anyway , i am not saying that there aren't 1000 other ways of doing this, i'm just saying thats how i got it done, but its no big deal to throw up a junk page takes 5 minutes lurch

    take a look

edit , no you dont' have to create a home page, pictural instructions be up in a jiffy

LOL lurch. That's just the kind of homepage i'm looking for. i like yours. I have Geocities on my other window right now, staring at it, figuring what to do.

I don't quite understand about the image hosting, but let me see how I do with my homepage. This is my first webspace, so ... might be a bigger deal for me, LOL.

Thanks for your offering to host Sig, but I'm not that advanced yet. Well, I'm heading back there right now.

PS - Do you mean if I give URL to somebody, they can only access particular item. Is that something I have to set up, or is that automatic in Geocities? Thank You.

well it wont let me put it up b/c it thinks its a duplicate, so i'll just click on the link

    http://www.geocities.com/lurch636/pge666asdfl.jpg

but theres how to upload pics, and no its not a geocities thing its just the way it works, you are onlly giving them the url to that file, if they chop part of it off they would get to a different part of your page, but that doesn't get them anywhere becuase geocities makes sure that you login first, well hope it helps, lurch

    lurch-You still with me?

I was hoping to upload-? a picture from the generic "Sample Pictures" Folder on to my web page. I clicked on Browse, went to sample pictures folder, selected generic picture and now, nothing. I think I'm going to give up on this but a picture would have been nice.

do you mean that you want it to be presented on your page, or you just want to upload it so that you can look at it seperately?

    yes, presented on page *sigh*.

I tried to upload and got 2 messages: one said it was loading and to be patient. The other (simultaneous) window said there was a problem.

I finally said "screw it" and cancelled, and went to next/final frame. There it refused to accept name for my page. I gave up. I was using the Wizard, not the Custom building, for, uhm, obvious reasons.

I don't even know how to find it again to re-start building.
I am a lost cause it seems.

Oh, BobB! YOUR brain hurts?! Gosh I can't even do a web page even with lurch's good help. I know this is all easy as pie for you guys, but it isn't working out for me. So, like i said earlier, that's everything that happened to me.

BobB, now your brain is going to Scream: what does html format mean? No, I am not kidding.

Do I want file serve capabilities?
I want to be able to host pictures on the site that i can post or email at a later date. Not for general viewing on the web.

Is that an answer you can work with? lol, I'm sorry ... but I don't think I can take anymore of this. I certainly feel quite inadequate.

well emailing the pictures will work fine , but hosting them from there to display them here wont work, they have that blocked, you would just be allowed to post a link to it, unless you find a server which doesn't stop you from doing that, although the common ones like angelfire, geocitites ... all don't , but lots of places give free web space, just have to find one that isn't so stringent, html

HTML is the lingua franca for publishing hypertext on the World Wide Web. It is a non-proprietary format based upon SGML, and can be created and processed by a wide range of tools, from simple plain text editors - you type it in from scratch- to sophisticated WYSIWYG authoring tools. HTML uses tags such as <h1> and </h1> to structure text into headings, paragraphs, lists, hypertext links etc. Here is a 10-minute guide for newcomers to HTML. W3C's statement of direction for HTML is given on the HTML Activity Page. See also the page on our work on the next generation of Web forms, and the section on Web history.

    Darcy Darcy Darcy!

Basically from what I gather, you want to just store your pics on the host as if it were another harddrive, so that you can access them from any terminal. Sure you can do that, just upload your stuff via the FTP service on geocities to your hearts content (or your space limit, whichever comes first ). Now if you wanted to get all schnazzy, you can code yourself up a quick web page (html format basically means make it viewable on the web, lookin like BBF like.) but you don't want that Im guessing GODAMMN BUS!! ok, sorry the s48 local gets a little carried away. So if you do want to learn some basic coding tricks, let me know. we can have your images up in no time. So will there be anything else on the plate this evening?

SOBs won't let you link images to other sites. Can't believe I'm paying money to host one or two photos. Man, I seriously need to work on my perl and php skillz. Not to mention linux and apache. I said god damn, my noggin hurts. :steamed:

    thumb up

I was here earlier but the massive input overloaded my morning brain. Wow. Thanks for all this information and help! (no buses today, BobB). I have 2 things in mind for webhost: hosting pictures/images that are already actually in my Pictures Folders, and for ones I might come across on the internet.

lurch, thank you for the html explanation. I am temporarily putting that on the back burner until I can figure out the simpler stuff. But I see you are giving me html homework; thank u for the link. I appreciate it.

BobB BobB BobB! Yes, you are gathering correctly. That "just upload your stuff" is still a work in progress, lol. You are very patient. I thought you were an older gentleman from your posts and temperance, but I see I was mistaken. That is refreshing. And I was able to view your link/jpg. Fine looking fella.

Thank you all again. I will go back to the drawing board with my webspace. But now BobB is saying "F geocities"!! Well, I think I will still give it a go - I need the practice for sure.

And watch out for those fumes AS. uh oh....bus.

Very odd, I still can't see the image via the link, but you can. Oh and I've always been saying "F" Geocities... since I signed up 6 years ago I've been saying that, but it doesn't stop me from using their webspace : oh and thank you.

Darce, wasn't upset at all, was quite flattered actually. but you really ought to be careful of them buses tho! after repeated attacks, you may wind up like this

So you had to drag it into the browser, gotcha... knew those geocities/yahoo guys weren't throwing straight dice.

That's a beautiful pic Darcy, & no, it's not too big, 800x600 is just fine, 1024x768 gets a little long to download but still OK, anything larger than that is a pain to the guys on a dialup connection. I am also curious about the pic.

Hello Heretic, Alakazam. I like the photo too and it's the one I tried to put up on my webpage but that's another story. It came already loaded as a Sample picture - no ripping! Photoshop. Now that's something I will eventually will be interested in but I'm not that advanced yet. I'm still about a lot of things.

    No prob, BobB.

Can we continue with the webpage saga now?

I have the webpage up and now want to try to load a picture up to it. I've downloaded WS_FTP LE and am ready for action. I tinkered around with no success.- and want to do a test load.

    Any takers? :rollout:

Hmm, hold up a sec. Geocities has a built in FTP service. You usin that one or a third party app? Or are you just talkin about uploading WP_FTP LE to geocities?
