We'll just have to wait and see if AMD shot itself in the foot. Personally, I think they're taking a big marketing gamble but what do I know.
"The Athlon XP - if such it is named - is expected to ship at 1.5GHz, but DigiTimes notes that the base processor is likely to be 1.33GHz. How can we reconcile these facts? Because the 1.33GHz CPU will have a model number of 1500+, to suggest that it has an Intel-equivalent clock speed of 1.5GHz. There will be a 1.5GHz Athlon XP, but it will have a model number of 1800+, viz:"
AMD's Athlon XP Model Numbers
XP Clock Speed Model Number
1.333GHz 1500+
1.400GHz 1600+
1.467GHz 1700+
1.500GHz 1800+
1.600GHz 1900+
Thanks to Tony Smith over at the Register for the info.
Also read the article on The Enquirer. What a disgrace. I mean, please, just state your actual speed. Don't go basing your standard on the evil Intel's speed. Screw Intel.
With that said, I'm still going to buy one of them AMD XP like almost everyone here, except for Mr. Intel, Skamp.![]()

Dude, check out my DVD Collection!
Remember the consumer backlash that Cyrix got when they tried to do the same ratings to their Chips??? And now XP???
AMD get a clue...redesign your pipeline or layout and accelerate your transition to 0.13u!!
AMD ... your bloody NUTS ...
Ok, so I order a 1900 only to find its a 1500 ... can I sue?Instead of selling a 1.5GHz Athlon, AMD will sell the chip as an Athlon 1900+.
A Real Case Scenario. ( www.helpdesk-computers.co.uk )((gentle plug for me))
Phone rings ...
"yes sir, how can I help you?"
"I cannot run this game on my 300"
Hmmm, "what are the minimum requirements for the game, sir?"
"it say's 266 32mb ram ... Bla Bla ..."
"and what processor do you have, sir"
"I have a Cyrix 300 CPU"
ah, hum, "well, sir, that actually is a 233 so the game will not run on your system"
"WHAT! I bought a 300 system and you’re telling me it’s a 233?"
"yes sir" ... boy, its at this stage that I get the giggles ... its NOT one of my systems.
“well we’ll see about that …”
Phone goes dead.
This actually happened, and on more than one occasion, now AMD want to turn back the clock and do the same?

MD, is the general public that guillable or am I just on the inside looking out? A lot of you guys deal with people on a day to day basis regarding puters, would they actually fall for this. Maybe I'm naive, but I can't believe the general public would buy this scheme, it failed once before but if they can buy an amd "1800" for $400 cheaper than an intel 1.5 gig, who knows.
Let me point something out in my original post

The thing is, the XP play COULD work to make stupid consumers thing that you have to get an Athlon XP to run Windows XP increasing AMD market share which is always a good thing.
Marketing hype sucks!
Just tell it like it is!
