Question ADSL Routers (need help finding one)

I'm upgrading to ADSL soon and am in the market for an ADSL Router. I would like one with at least 5 ports and as many features as possible. I'm not looking to break the bank but would appreciate any and all suggestions.

    TIA, Slayer

PS. The supplier is a friend who only provides ADSL for business customers with a 20:1 connection ratio and after 6PM my bandwitdth gets booooooosted to 2Mbps Pitty I havent got an inside man at the lottery HQ!

Ooooh! - tasty! To our US friends, who are used to multi MB connections at home via cable modems - 2 MB for residential in UK is not usual. To Slayer I say "Mm - Mmmmmm"

I did a review of a bunch of SOHO routers, and from what I played with I would recommend:

    1 - MultiTech

    2 - ZyXEL

    3 - Asante

Not in that order really... just 3 that I found work very well, and have good support. Stay away from Linksys... I wouldn't wish a linksys on Sadam... ok maybe I would...

that would be good.... i use a befsr41 in work on our cable modem, and so far it's operation has been flawless, even allowing my vpn and ssh to work great

From my experience with Linksys is:

    1) Their support is some of the worse I have ever seen. They can not help you configure even the most basic set up's on their own routers.

    2) There BIOS upgrades are flaky, and cause normally not only as many problems, as ones they solve, but also tend to cause more catastrophic failures on the routers than any other companies.

    3) Their actual performance (specially on the switch side), is very poor compared to other SOHO class router/switches.

I owned one for close to a year, and always experienced a very strange problem on my E-mail server. Because of the server, I was always pointing to the server/software not the Linksys. After changing out the server, and upgrading the software the problem remained. It wasn't until I replaced the Linksys that my problems all went away.

I have upgraded again after that, and I'm now running much higher end stuff (like a Cisco 2924 Switch.. hehehe) and all flakiness I had is 100% gone!!

Fair enough BC ... i've done a bios upgrade on ours, and it went ok, and as for needing support... neh!!

The interface is a bit weird, but easy enough to work with provided you can find what your looking for

Your mail server problems.... what happened there mate?? i'm having a little issue but i dont know if it's down to my pos hosting provider or an internal network fault.

    Hiya BigCheeze

U say one of your issues withur Linksys router was regarding ur email server, and becuase it didn't work with ur particular setup - u say u couldn't recommend it to anybody else.... regardless of what setup they have.... Don't u think that's a bit of a blanket statement?

It may be a conflict - it could have just been a plain silly old setup error - I wouldn't go writing of a linksys router used by large percentage of people just becuase of that ..... Now if there were lots of peeps all saying what u said, amy be a different story.

    Good hearing ur opinion anyway....

Hey Tech.. it's more than that. Also, let's not forget what I do for a living... I'm a Network Engineer. So every day I Design, Build, and maintain networks (Ok, I don't actually build'm and design them every day... )... So.. at least as far as this is concerened, I'm smarter than the average bear So it is possible I have higher expections for network hardware, but... it that a bad thing??

Also..... As I said, I had changed servers & upgraded the software and the problem remained (I went from a P133 runing NT 4.0 to K6-2 runing W2K)... so I 100% sure it wasn't the server.

And lastly if you look around, you will find almost every Linksys owner says.. well I've had this, or that... and mostly their some minor issuse, but.. their issues none the less.

And as I said, their support is very well known to be very very poor... here is what Practically Networked says:

    Pros:
    - Relatively Fast
    - Widely available
    - Includes 4 port 10/100Mbps switch.

    Cons:
    - Ongoing firmware quality problems
    - Tech support difficult to reach
    - Difficult firmware upgrading w/MacOS

I'm sure you have a Linksys and are happy with it... and that's great !! I sold my Linksys to someone (for $20) and he's happy with it. He doesn't host any servers behind it, doesn't need mutilple Real world IP address, etc... all the stuff I needed. So it works for him, But that doesn't mean I would recommed them.

And just remember, these are just my experinces and my recommenedation, it's not like Gawd him self is juding the world based on what I say!

    Hi BigCheeze

No - not a Linksys owner I have had hardware that has conflicted, with something else, I have advised people about that conflict, but haven't necassarily advised people against buying it, as it's conflict would only affect a very small majority, maybe a bit like ur mail server (which was it, purely out of interest! )

Still, it;s very important ot share all knowledge about problems, as it then enables pople to make an informative decision.
