ok here are the specs

FIC SD-11 800@1000
640 meg's of ram
GeForce MX
Linksys Nic
40 Gig Western Digital drive
300 watt ATX
western digital "lifeguard Diagnostic"
Window's 98

I came home today and saw that my hdd led was blinking solid for a sec then off for a sec and kept up like that. when I turned on the screen it said[QUOTE] write error C:/QUOTE]. Then hit the spacebar and it returned to the desktop but shortly after it locked hard (the led was still blinking). I reset the computer and then shortly after that it locked up again.
I am at wits end, I have lowered the clock speed to stock and did virus scans, all no avail.
Western digital Diagnostics- Quick test passed Long test passed and when I veiwed the drive it told me that it was fit and had no errors.
This computer has run non-stop UD'ing and gaming for over a year without a single hitch. I have not installed a game or anything on this computer in quite a while. What could be the problem?

I waited 10 minutes before I posted, it's locked up tight again. WTF

It's not hot, I had cleaned out the slot Alpha and checked the 2 delta's, the case fans are all working and the temp it pretty cool.

PSU I have another that I can use, but it seems to be going strong.

the hard drive seems to "load up" after a few minutes the hdd led starts to blink.

Think you could run a scandisk or defrag on it? It's all to easy to forget about those simple tools.

CC,I have WD also,and I'm not sure how accurate the tests are on the drives.I talked to a couple others that ended up RMA to resolve similar problems.I hope that's not the case with your's.Did you use the new WD tools they just came out with?I use the Data Lifequard to boot,then setup the ATA etc.I'm sure you've gone that route.

Scandisk IS a very good tool ... let it do a surface scan in "safe mode" ...

ok ladies and gentlemen, I have narrowed the problem, and I will give you 3 guesses, and the first 2 don't count. I had windows puke on me time and time again. I had constant blue screens of death. I did something that is expected of a windows machine. I formated C: and then installed windows 2000.

I have tried all the mentioned above and it still puked in my face, so I formated it. Now it hasn't locked up yet(going on 5 hours, but Iwill let you know if I am having a pipe dream or if it was windows messing up.

tell you more tommorow morning if it locked up again.
