I'm gonna install the Alpha today and was wondering if any of you fine folk could offer any advice? Should I follow the instructions or are there any hidden problems I need to know about?

Also, should I use a shim?

    TIA

Pretty simple install bro...a little daunting if this is your first socket hole install but not too bad. Just follow the instructions and this thread

Shim not really needed. Just screw in a diagonal pattern making sure the cooler is level at all times. Only nuisance is the nut tends to "spin" when tightening so just use a dab of superglue to keep that from happening. Or you could make a socket mobo cutout like moi and not worry about it

Thanks Bro', I've just installed it without a shim and all seems to be well. I have the fan blowing away from the HS but I'm gonna have to watch the temps and may need to change the config of my case fans.

    So far so good

Yup, definitely put some super glue on the nuts and washer that makes up the anchor on the mobo. The problem's not putting the Alpha on, but getting it off. If you don't make the anchors stationary, they'll spin out when you turn the long screws that frees up the HS.
