i'll prob. be awol for a couple of days..
just got my new rackies today, so i'll be slapping all that i can inside of them..

bummer thing tho is i dont think i can use my "new/used" 462 in them..no pre-drilled holes

but we waits and sees just how much ingenuity i can muster up..
    catch ya's soon...
    (wish i had a digi cam.. )

No pre-drilled holes? Not a problem! Why don't you just line up your mobo to the mobo tray, give it a 1/8" toward the I/O, mark the stand-off holes through holes on mobo, and you're set.

    DOH...
DA needs to learn how to search info before jumping gun..
looking at the 462, it would appear that one needs holes in the case to retain it, but after furthur investigation it looks like DA was an idiot..
checking a couple of sites, i've discoved the screw retainers go above the board..with the plastic "nuts" below..
ah well, we learns something new every day..

(good thing too..that 6" nail idea scared the begeezers outta me.. )

    thanx for the replies guys!!!
1 rig down, 3 to go!!!
tho i think i'll do the next ones with a little more care and forethought..even tho you'll never see inside the case, it'd be nice to arrange things nicely..

pics'll prob. have to be after the fact..i was borrowing my bro's cam for a while, but he had to return it to the school..damn, teachers are supposed to be able to borrow stuff..it's the students that are supposed to return things..

    hmmmm..which one is next..hmmmm

    "I SHALL RETURN.. "

    thanx cat...i hope so too
i did peel up the delta on it today, and removed the big clump of "whatever that crap is that loves to collect in hsf's" and it did drop down a couple of degrees, but if i close the office door the breeze disappears along with the cooler temp..

    C'MON WINTER!!!!!
ya can keep the snow..just gimme the temps i'm looking for..

Damn Bro!!! That rack is going to resemble our IBM E-server racks at work. Got a total of 32 rack servers all in black humming away...amazing how much heat a computer puts out...that server room is cooled to 65C to keep things stable.

    hey IA...
i'm hoping mother nature will help me out..
i've already got the office window open and the temps are supposed to be hanging in the -3 to 3 for a couple of days..
but, my office is on the second floor (the condo is double decker..main areas down stairs and the bedrooms are up..) so all of the heat rises up here and unfortunately it seems to amass right inside my cases
i've tried 14" fans in and around and blowing the heat outside, but as of yet no great success..
time to drill 80's me thinks for case exhaust..but then what about the case above it..hmmmm

oh, decided too that, as per prior recommendations (ya'll know who ya be..) i'll be building it all out of wood..including the framing..
2x2, 2x4 and 1" ply for shelving and 3/4" "finished" plywood for the sides..
doh, and gotta remember the highspeed "exhaust" blower (like in a bathroom...WWRRRRRRRRRRRR...)

i'll prob start on that part of it this weekend (between frequent trips to the TO computer show and the leather show in Brampton )

    again, peace all!!!
and thanx for the interest and suggestions over the past couple of months!!!!

    front view..
looks like i'll have just enuf room (i hope) for a rackmount kvm..
i have about 1.5" left to work with..

more pics to come later when i finish moving over the rest of my rigs..
i'll do interior shots of at least one of them..(not much sense doing super clean installs in rack cases as they're never seen..but maybe i'll do a window in the top one as it might receive some "notice"..

k..here we are on the imaging box..
i don't wanna post too many pics as i've been asked to do a review/write up on the "adventure" so..
but here's a little sampler of the top case..
still have to add a window, the switch and 2x92's but i think it'll look pretty cool with "blue" emanating from the top of the rack..

so hopefully in the future i can get my hands on a good kvm and a UPS..
of course then i'll need a taller rack
maybe the 6' will serve my purposes better..
    or a second one..
hmmmmm..another fit of lunacy is entering me imagination..

Oh DA - that looks sooo sweet! Remind me again what you are running on all those boxes? I know some are old boxes from yesteryears that you are running seti on, but I'm outa touch with what you are running more recently.

How's the cooling going? Also get ready for the noise that lot is going to make - going to seriously raise the ambient noise in that room!

Talking about rack mount KVM , I was handling a couple of 8 port 2U Compaq rack mount KVMs just last week, they were going into our team build area for building our swingkit. They sure are heavy, ridiculously so, when you see how much miniturisation has made domestic versions so small and light these days.

Writing an article? - that should be a good read - lets us all know where it's at when it gets air'ed.

    hey Tech..thanx!!
all i have right now in the rackies is the Iwill KA266-R, the KT7A-R and the KG7 (two bottom cases and the top beige is the KG)
i haven't changed over the KT7 or KT7-R as one is being used by my boarder and the other..well i'd be offline for a short if i did that one..

hmmmm..well if one of those Compaq's get's lost lemme know okay..
    hmmm..2U eh??
for sure i'll have to get another rack..i'm almost outta room now..
the noise isn't too bad actually..i've had all 5 systems going in here before and it was tolerable..
i've never had any problems "physically" with sound levels and get tested once a year at work..my hearing has only improved over the years..
imo, if you consider it noise you tend to try and ignore it..all of it..
but if you actually try to listen to it and decipher the differences in it for say diagnosis, your hearing becomes sharper and more acute..
    but hey..maybe i'm just "crazy"..

    Cat..
whenever/if ever ya need some help pal..
gimme about 6 months notice and i'll ride down for a week..
i'll stop and see Dramen on the way thru..
would make for a cool trip actually..

Is that mah swifty in that beige rack of yours

On a serious note, kewl beans on the UPS...with all that expensive toyz you got I would hate for a power spike/bad line to put ya out of commission. Utility companies put ouch very noisy power and frequent spikes

IA...sharp eye you have there pal
    eeeh yup..that be she!!
got the delta 80x38 for it and all is well..she's in good powerful hands now and absorbing heat like what would be expected..
and she's been "seeing to my needs" for a good 4 hours already since initial reboot..
(that reminds me..gotta change the battery on that rig..i lost me bios settings)

first thing after the kvm will for sure be a UPS..
    thanx for the concern..'tis appreciated..

On both racks and the article.

If you take the rack tops to a sheetmetal shop, most will be able to punch louvers into them. You can have them direct them which ever way you want.Careful with the placement if you want to add a fan under the louvers.

Here are links to prefabed enclosure add-on's(pic is the same 4 all, dimensions are not)

    you the man!!!!
i'm almost apt to slap myself i didn't think of that....
i like your idea about the fan too..if i put them at the rear of the case lids there'd be minimal heating to the rig above!!!

again...thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
i owe ya one big time!!!

So what did you do with the wooden frame? Make a wardrobe? Or maybe a packing case for exporting Harley Parts

DA, that's a real fine article and very interesting. Keep us all posted on any cooling solutions you come up with.

I should imagine the convenience factor is pleasing

    heh..well fb..
the shorter pieces are sitting by the fireplace just waiting for a cold winter day
the longer ones i took down to storage..ya never know what my next project will need..

i definitely think i'm gonna give James suggestion a shot..it should work beautifully in an open OR closed system..

and ya...'tis nice to be able to lean to one side, click a switch and have the info i need right there..course now i'll end up having a big ol' ass cuz i can now sit here all day and not have to move 'cept to relieve meself....
and even then...maybe i'll take up watercooling and not have to worry about that either.. :fishbowl:

Loved the Article DA! I think we can all add you to our list of potential BBF reviewers once we cross that plateau

    Only one thing though...

"I was able to get some links for equipment available through various American companies from some of my forum buddies at Icrontic and elsewhere.

    Would that elsewhere be BitBenderForums

damn near exclusively IA, but was unknown what "response" it might have received if added..

once things get to that stage here tho, for sure lemme know..

i'm to do another i think on the ati tv wonder usb for IC, but after that i'll begin reserving my "stash o' shyt" for bbf's..

i'm more of a laid back modder/manipulater of materials than most folks, and my analytical knowledge is also restricted (temps..what's the difference i saw??..who cares..), but i'd be more than happy to do a couple dozen "hey, look what i did"'s..
would love to see this place climb the ladder in being a major player in the world of hardware reviews along with being the great forum that it is..

    tech...thanx pal!!
