I was close today to decorating my case with yet another burnt out athlon XP chip. I came up stairs to discover a beeping noie coming from my PC and blanked out screens. I checked my thermal probe as an almost instant reaction and saw the reading of 80 degrees C. I though i was screwed. On further investigation i discovered that the fan had fallen off my SK6. The getto duct tape mod had failed, see here.
However i relised that the last time my chips had burnt they didn't beep at all and since the reading had stayed at 80 degrees i thought that it may be ok. Wheni remeberd that the XP chip had a thermal cutoff diode i became more confident.
After using my big 12" room fan to cool everything back down again i booted up and tomy relief,it all worked. I am now using much more duct tape to secure things pending the attachment of some bolts between fan adaptor and chasis. I guess ghetto just don't cut it anymore.

Dude.. u burnt 2 Xp chips already.. Get something a lil more reliable than Duct Tape for cryin out loud!
Just jerkin yer chain. Seriously though, it definatly sounds like you need some hardware up in there to hold that fan in place. A lil bit of Aluminum Bar Stock is easily bent into shape. Pretty cheep at Lowes too.

Ahh, the other 2 chips where burnt due to me not mounting the HS correctly, the duct tape was inocent in those two cases, but it scared the hell out of my tonight. My credit card nearly threm itself out the window thinking it would have to buy me yet another replacment chip.
Good idea about the aluminuim though, i like that and may give it a go rather than drilling holes in everything.

Last I saw, I think you could get a 3' piece for a buck or 2.. About half an inch wide. Should be really easy to make a high quality fan holder outta that.

damn dawg that would have been 3 XP chips...katz got nutin against that kind of destruction....well we could have use them as keychains to the next Team BBT giveaway.

Dude....why don't you use a Hardware Monitor with Shutdown Plugins? I use Hardware Monitor Pro from Alexander Berezkin in conjunction with Poweroff. Automatically shuts down my programs and shuts the Computer down if Temps reach a certain limit.
MBM and even Via Hardware Monitor have plugins that will enable a software shutdown.

MD, glad ya didn't fry it. To be honest I would go with a fan that the sk6 can use until you find a better alternative tha tape, such as JB's suggestion. why take anymore chances.
Chickenman's advice is good, I use mbm with poweroff myself.

MD, you ever thought about getting some spring like IA and hook the 80mm fan (or was that 90mm) to the SK6? You know, 4 springs on each corner of fan, and hook the other end to the holes where the original wires for the SK6 fan mounting go.

I recon the chance of the second load of duck ( mind the pun or rather the pond) tape falling off aswell is not negibale (?spelling?). The fan that you mounted vibrates, like all fans do, and even though you use duck tape the risk of the vibrations caused by fan to losen is considrable.
If the fan losens just a bit the fan will vibrate more causing, in the end, the fan to losen more and eventually fall off.
I say like the rest get that fan secured ASAP.
If not I am booking that keychain...

I'm not betting on this tape lasting much longer either, so i'm going to be checking it everynight until i can get my ass down to the lovcal builders merchant and get some real hardware.
I'm not actually worried about the the chip if the fan does fall off again as i know the thermal diode in the XP chip does work. THe chip is also unlikley to be damaged during this heating as the HS will still be attached to the core. XP chips only seem to die when you actually lose the HS as i well know by now.
