The cables are cool but they are benching slower then the ata100 versions of the same drive in the review at storagereview.com and their reviews are usually very accurate on disks.

    Cheers

those reported outputs really aren't that impressive when you take into account what a half decent ata133 can churn out.

    as tex said.... OUCH!

yeah they aren't speed demons but their noise floor is silent. sometimes you got to see what you really want and for me, silence is king. scores aren't too shabby - i reckon their 7200.plus models will have better performance

googlegear has it for $143 shipped dra, but even at those prices, the premium of SATA over Parallel is substantial.

I've been looking more at the Barracuda IV models selling around $90ish as an option. Not sure which way im going to go yet.

after much research and thinking, i have decided to go with the Hitachi/IBM Desktar 180GXP 120GB 8MB Cache Model. The price is right around a Cuda V 80GB Serial so i gain an additional 40GB.

Plus the IBM blows away the Cuda on performance and noise is just as quiet. The 3-year warranty helped make my decision too.

The IBM is the best in terms of quiet and performance. Quieter then the WD JB's and perform on par if not better then them.

Im gonna let SATA mature for awhile and i can always get the Serial Adaptor in the future for this drive.

I'll let you know how this drive turns out!

IA: I installed one of those last friday for a box I made for a buddy. He paid 99 bucks for the 120gb 180gxp. If they pop on sale again this week I want one too.

is that the 2MB cache model or the 8mb cache model. judging from the price i would venture to say its the 2mb model as the 8mb are going for around $130-140.

2mb. It hit over 53,000 on atto on a K7S5A-Pro motherboard with no tweaks or anything and that wasnt exactly on the rim either as it had the OS installed. It felt good... (grin) Thats no UDMA driver installed or anything. Just straight XP with 4k ntfs clusters. I was very pleased for the price overall. Will be interesting to see your scores and see if they are worth another 40 bucks. Its gonna be faster but. I wonder how much faster?
