So far ??
Totally sweeter GUI
A bit faster. Not alot of changes between this and before really.
btw, thas one sweet Av![]()
TY, Bits.
I'm getting ready to re-install RH8 on one my drives, and wondered about the differences between 8 and 9.
I know that the differences between Mandrake 8.1 and 8.2 were enough to make my floppy drive work, my cdrom work, and a few other things.
Although RH8 ran pretty good for me anyway.
(ty for the compliment the avy. I made it me self)
Bits great article. Its inspired me to have a go at setting up a linux server box when I get another system.
One question. Which iso version is it I need to download. Is it shrike-i386 discs 1-3 or shrike-SRPMS discs 1-3.
Cheers
Jim
Oh and second that on the great av, LP![]()
System 1
Watercooled DFI DK T3eH6, Intel i7 920@4.2GHZ, 6GB Patriot DDR3, Intel X25M 80GB SSD, WD 640GB, XFX 4890 1GB, Antec 600w NewPower psu, Liteon DVD/CD-R Combo burner
Jim get the three binary(shrike-i386 ) disc's. You can get access to dedicated servers for the download if you buy your subscription first. It's like 60 bucks, for a year.
Ta Bits, currently downloading all three, only 7hrs to go!!
Ok so I downloaded RH 9 burnt the iso's to disk correctly, having first ensured the integrity of the iso's using md5sum. Then started to install RH9 having checked the disks. But it wont install. First time I got to the point where the installation started but it then errored. Now it wont even get that far, i get some command line error saying that there's a compressed image in boot sector 0 and then some type of kernel error. I low level formated the disk & I still get the error. Any ideas as to wots up. The idea is that i set one of my boxes up as a permanently on server type system so that I can host a web page & possibly run UD in the background. Should I just give up with Linux & use microsoft?
No. Microsoft can't run a good web server unless you have 20 thousand dollars to get advanced server from them.
As I said in the article, Jim, even thou the media check goes ok, it may still error out. Also, cut and paste the error, or give me something more than "It errored out" to work with.
I had no issues with the operating system on the first install, but found that the Xwindows config files in /home/bitbender were not converted properly.
I then wiped the entire build and repeated it, using the article as a guide. I got read errors on Disc II and Disc III, but was able to remount the CD and proceceed. The Xwondows situation did not repeast itself, so I attributed it to media issues.
After the first case, I REMOVED all partitions(except /home) and rebuilt them, and that seemed to help the process alot.
Thanks
Hi Bits, Cant do a cut and paste as its on a different box but I'll write it down and then post it. After the installation screwed up the first time I used fdisk to delete all the partitions and then low level formated the disk. anyway I'll get back soon with more details. Sorry I didn't post much to go with previously but I was at work.
Cheers
Jim
Ok Update, Red Hat 9.0 is now successfully installed. God knows what the problem was but it wasn't the disk, probably a dogdy ide connector or somthing.
So Linux Red hat 9.0 .....hmmmm...give me back windows XP I know what I'm doing kind of. Rh I cant even figure out how to configure an internet connection. Anyone got a link to Rh for morons guide
Cheers
Jim

Give it a chance...It's a "differernt" operating system than MS, and it does take a little time to get used to, like driving a ford after a chevyThe chevy is 'inherently' better !!
cheers !![]()
Woot Woot, i'm writing this using the Konqueror web browser in RH9. I wanted to use Mozilla but I cant seem to get it to load. Keep getting "can not launch icon"
Details: Failed to execute child process "mozilla" (No such file or directory)
What ever that means???
Anyway at the rate I'm learning Linux I'll have a server set up in about 99 years
God.. its so strange.
