    f**king NB fan....

My northbridge fan on my MSI KT3-Ultra died on thursday morning (well not died exactly but started making a really horrible noise so I had to unplug it).

Since this I've been running the system with the case side off and it has seemed to be stable (current uptime is at 3.5 days). Am going to get away with this or am I slowly goign to be cooking my mobo?

You'll get away with it. Your system will become unstable before it gets so hot it cooks the chip. The northbridge isn't anything like the cpu in terms of heat buildup - it's a lot slower buildup . . .
It is harder and harder to make a case to a weary and dismayed population that the Western way of life as managed by the Anglosphere ought to be spread around the world at the point of a gun.

karak, is your kt3ultra the raid version? mine isn't and it doesn't even have a nb fan, just a heatsink, and i've never even felt it get that warm.

    basically, dont panic...

I have the heatsink off my KT3 Ultra if you want that. I replaced that with the Zalman Northbridge cooler which you can buy here

Pull it off, peel the sticker off the back and put in a small drop of oil. It will be fine for a few months. Do this a few times and you'll finally tire of the process and leave it off.

    Talking

Yep, had the same problem on my Gigabyte GA-7VAXP.
Started making a awfull racket, even worse than that jet engine on the CPU!

I replaced in with a 40mm fan I salvaged from a dead Abit KT7-RAID. Still going without any problems.
