    What Do Grandmother's Do.

Subject: An 8 year old's perspective regarding grandparents

Taken from papers written by a class of 8 year klds.

A grandmother is a lady who has no little children of her own. She likes other people's.

A grandfather is a man grandmother.

Grandmothers don't have to do anything except be there when we come to see them.

They are so old they shouldn't play hard or run.

It is good if they drive us to the store and have lots of quarters for us.

When they take us for walks, they slow down past things like pretty leaves and aterpillars.

They show us and talk to us about the color of the flowers and also don't step on "cracks."

    They don't say, "Hurry up."

Usually grandmothers are fat, but not too fat to tie your shoes.

They wear glasses and funny underwear.

They can take their teeth and gums out.

Grandmothers don't have to be smart.

They have to answer questions like "why isn't God
married"? and " How come dogs chase cats.

When they read to us, they don't skip.

They don't mind if we ask for the same story over again.

Everybody should try to have a grandmother, especially if you don't have television, because they are the only grown ups who like to spend time with us

They know we should have snack-time before bedtime and they say prayers with us every time, and kiss us even when we've acted bad.

Loved my grandma's kitchen and the wonderful smells and the warmth. She taught me "scratch cooking" that you can't get from any cookbook!

Being a grandpa now is very kewl. I get to play again. Tough on the knees tho, but worth the pain anytime. lol

(And, when you do tire of them, you can send them home happy and eager to return.)

Oh, yeah, the greatest pay-off as a grandparent is that they will listen to lesson taught, where their parents wouldn't! LOL

I only had one Grandmother while growing up and she died when I was eight. Unfortunately, my memories of her are nothing like mentioned above.

I'm a Grandmother now, and my two grandkids are most precious to me. Even the almost two year old tells his mom that he wants to say hi to me on the phone, by pulling on the cord and yelling 'Grandma' over and over. When she hands him the phone he says 'love you, Grandma' without prompting. Tears roll down my face every time he does that.

If possible, it makes me love my daughter all the more to see the wonderful way she is raising these two little people.

Some of the best and warmest memories I have, is the time spent with my GrandMother's. Couldn't begin to say how much they meant to me and how much I miss them.
And yet, there is always something during the day, whether it be cooking something Italian, hearing a familiar saying, or a sudden remembrance of some long ago given advice, that triggers a fond memory and a sense of comfort.

Miss you both, and thanks for all you gave and did.

Best part of being a grandparent is winding up the kids, teaching them grose nursery rhyms and then sending them home to irritate thier parents. It's called getting even.

That really is a remarkable coincidence Va, which would certainly make Christmas day an extraordinarily special event for your family. Thanks for sharing that with us.

Pogal. You hit the nail on the head. It is, and always be, the integrity of the family, held together with developing love that shines though all adversity. Love always improves itself.
AND love is the main connection through the genes. Thank you for that wonderful observation.

My my. Miss Ola never whipped the Mohawk. Miiss Maggie(your Great-grandmother) took a stick to him a few times to get his attention.

Yes I would venture a guess that she(Miss Ola) took her hat with her.

Grandmothers eh? Never knew my Dad's Mum, she be dead before I was born, her name was Lucy. Oddly, without either of us being aware of my Nan's name at the time, we named one of our daughters Lucy.

My Mum's Mum was a complete Wacko and I loved her. She always made us laugh and was sort of 'out there'. Fantastic Lady. I swear her hair was six different colours. She passed away peacefully in '79.

Here's a pic of Lucy my Dad gave me a coupla years before he passed on. I've no idea when it was taken but it was taken in Birkenhead, just across the river from Liverpool, and she'd have been just one generation removed from County Cork, Eire.

Yes you Nan is a beautiful woman. I still think of my granny usually on a daily basis. She lived to be in her upper 90's. She was one hell of a woman. She lived thru things that would have killed most i guess but she never gave up. Always a fighter with a big heart.
