cannot ping, but ICS does work?

ok so when i try to ping one of my machines i get error code 65, Looked that up, said it was that my laptop has it's firewall set up so it can't ping. Ok i'm looking around in Admin Tools(i'm running win 2kpro on all 3 machines), where the hell do i turn this "feature, or bug" off???

Search the MS base for Settings in ICF (Internet Connection Firewall). The help in XP pro is really good on this subject.

thanks, but i am running win 2kpro. I have looked it up found a pretty good website, all that gave me was what the error means. So i tried to resolve the issue by the regular winhelp... yeah right! I googled it, but still didn't find much

Doesn't the 2k Pro have a Network Setup Wizard,the one in XP works really good on fixing that type thing.

did you try Control panel, network connection, when it opens u right click and choose properties... I'm running XP home, but it seems like yours should be there, too.

), i have looked all around my network connecter prop's... still do dice. this is really starting to bug me... that's for the help though!!!

It's been awhile since I ran 2000 but go into your Network Connections Folder . There should be Advanced on the toolbar. Then go to the bindings
(it's advanced setting in XP). See if your Printer and File bindings are checked on the machine you can't get to. I have this link it just confuses me but it might help you troubleshoot your network.

I run w2kpro here at work. I have 3 questions :

1. what machine is running ics? can it ping others on the network?

2. are you sharing files and is it working and just the ping fails?

3 was this setup manually or with a wizard?

edit: corrected stupid question and added another....

1: My box, yes it can ping the other computer on the network and can also share files...

2:Nothing works, when i try to access my computer from the laptop i get a workgroup not found

3:Manually... I compared my 2nd computer to my laptop, everything is the same...*sigh*

:edit: Ok i have my laptop here at work with me, so i don't have to wait when you guys have ideas, keep 'em coming please

a quick fix that often works ....

you're basic tcp/ip works fine.... can you do a start > run > \\192.168.0.xxx from your laptop and see the shares available on another machine? if so, then try changing the laptop to a completely different workgroup name, rebooting it and then changing it back..... that often makes everything work.

What I find interesting is the workgroup not found...
I would try Martz's suggestion,sounds like there may be something fubar'd in the tcpip settings.
Since you set this up manually, also make sure you have all the machines on the same subnet, and the masks are identical.
I share folders across machines on domains to machines not on a domain, workgroups are all different. only hitch I get is there is no way to reconnect without entering the password again when you go outside of a domain. But I live with that to maintain
security on this box.
Since the ping fails, I would look to the subnet being wrong,
or something is fubared in the setup. a workgroup name change should force a refresh of all the files, and may resolve.
If not, post the ip address and subnet masks of all the machines.

as tjm says, post your addy, subnet, gate and pri dns for each of the machines and lets see that your basic plumbing is ok. if it's just your laptop being ornery then that should be pretty easy to figure out.

also... why are you using manual addressing? ICS has a somewhat limited dhcp server built in, but generally speaking it works ok.

Well after a long time of dealing with this friggin' laptop, i got it to work... my girlfriend was over last night as she said that she hid her Zone alarm...*sigh*

. I wasn't running, but i started it anyways, and put the other ip's on to the safe list...

so now it is working, that's why i was getting "error code 65", because the frickin' ZA, was blocking the ip traffic, but why was it doing it when it wasn't loaded( before i did this i did check the proccess, to make sure it wasn't running) Well thanks for all the help!!

it is a little funny thinking about it now

If you had ZA on the machine , it was probably still running true vector services, which will load and run even with the applet not
showing in the taskbar. It runs as a service in w2k/xp, and is
started from the servieces area of computer manangement.
You could kill it there, change automatic to manual, and it will not start.
Or just do a complete uninstall.

eh i just assigned a range ip's that i do/might use to it's safe list. Thanks for the help tjm/martz
