angry how to get rid of all symantec?

Within XP Pro + SP1, I had Nortons Systemworks installed.

I uninstalled it and have Trend's PC Cillin AV running.

I recently updated my ATI Gigabyte 9200 VIVO card drivers and noticed during installation a message along the lines of 'Symantec NetDetect won't let you install this file as it's dangerous' or something like that.

WTF? I thought I'd got rid of all Nortons.

So I found two Symantec files on C drive, within Windows Task Scheduler and Program Files/Common Files, which I deleted under Safe Mode.

I then rebooted and used JV16 registry cleaner to try and get rid of two Symantec entries, but no go.

I then went into regedit and again could not delete any Symantec entries, it wouldn't let me.

I have two unknown devices showing in My Device Manager now, both video related.

I believe they're drivers for a secondary Monitor display for the ATI card, which is still shown as 'AT 9200 Series - Secondary' within the Adaptor section.

    Driving me frickin' nuts.

    Any solutions?

I'm seriously thinking of wiping this Partition (it's only 12Gb for OS, Office and stuff) just to be rid of Nortons.

I've quite enjoyed Nortons AV on my systems, but I'm beginning to think all the criticisms of it are well-founded.

Dunno if you need to go to Symantics site for info - let me just check . . .

    Hmmmn - you didn't say which version . . .

Well, anyway, check this out - It's "How to uninstall Norton SystemWorks manually"

    Myself, I'd just wipe it. I haven't installed NSW for awhile . . .
It is harder and harder to make a case to a weary and dismayed population that the Western way of life as managed by the Anglosphere ought to be spread around the world at the point of a gun.

yes, I should have thought of that, look at Symantec's site, hehe

what a palaver that is, manually uninstalling. It assumes for the most part that their instructions will be read before uninstallation is attempted. Oh well.

I really think it would be quicker for me to rip it up and start again

    bloody irritating

There are also two utilities at Symantec's site that you can use to mop up the mess. Go to their knowledge base search form and search for symclean and rnav. There's also one for Norton Personal Firewall/Internet Security though I forget its name.

About regedit not allowing you to remove entries, Windows NT/2000/XP has registry key permissions. You may have to grant yourself permissions on certain subkeys you want to edit or remove.

You'll find that info in the registry howto:

did you go to control panel and look at task scheduler and click properties for symantec netdetect and clear the 'enabled' check box?

also in services, disable 'norton antivirus', norton unerase, and 'scriptblocking service', they appear in the registery just as i typed them.

    delete this folder:

where yourusrename is the name you log on with

    C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\Symantec

and this one just as it is.

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec
