AMD preps Appalbred as Duron heir

    from The Register:

"AMD will shortly ship a new low-end processor, codenamed 'Appalbred', the successor to the Duron.

So claims Eastern European web site AMD.com.ua, citing "reliable sources in AMD" as the basis for its report.

Appalbred will initially ship in three forms: 1400, 1600 and 1800, priced at $32, $39 and $47, respectively.

AMD.com.ua is "supported by" Austrian electronics distributor Chi Electronics, which numbers AMD among its suppliers, so it should know what the chip maker is up to.

AMD's official price list contains just two desktop Durons, at 1.2GHz and 1.3GHz, priced at $39 and $44, respectively. If the Appalbred information is correct, it would indeed appear to be a Duron replacement - or at least a new core for the old brand.

Motherboards that will support Appalbred include offerings from MSI, ECS, Asus, Asrock, Shuttle, Biostar, Gigabyte and FSI.

Appalbred-compatible chipsets include a number of 266MHz frontside bus parts, suggesting that that's what Appalbred operates at."

Appalbred ?? sounds like some type of breakfast food. :spin:

Probably a Duron based on the Thoroughbred core. This seems like a waste of time and money. why not push quality Opteron components instead. Oh wait, yeah, they can't yield as many of the good CPUs so it can't be as cheap. Anyways, this might be good for the "emachine" types of PC used for typing and browsing the web, but thats just about it imo.

yup, i don't get it, seems like a waste. for $40 anyone can buy a 1700+ tbred, so why pay $44 for an applebread.

Applabred probably comes from the Appaloosa. I recall somewhere reading about that particular chip. I just dont recall in what context it was. It would appear that someone at AMD has a thing for horses.

and Dramen if it is indeed simliar to the Durons than one would assume that it has a lower cache on it than the 1700+ Tbred. It is after all its budget line of chips.

appal = appaloosa... me didn't get the association at first, but yup, bet your right TH, it fits the horse naming trend.

and speaking of horses, this one might come in dead last.
