So there I was, playing a CD on my Hi-Fi setup, and I notice a low farting noise every time a low bass note is played.

On taking off the speaker grille of the offending Gale loudspeaker, I notice with some dismay the paper cone has become entirely seperate from the rubber surround.

I checked all my suppliers but none of 'em supply quality replacement drivers, only crappy Audax and stuff.

So anybody know any UK suppliers of good speaker drivers? I need a 6.5" (170mm) Bass/Midrange driver, 8 ohms, 75 watts, frequency, hmm, lets say 300hz to 20khz.

Hmmmm not sure if we carry a midrange driver the small in the shop. I know we can get one if you dont find one over there.

Any brand preference. I do believe we can get virtually any brand.

good luck in getting the offending cabinet to work again.

Don't need to have a CD on to hear farting sounds in my house

but seriously now.... skamp has a point there, the driver you got is tuned to live with the enclosure, crossover and tweeter unit together. Replacing just the bass unit will ruin all that balance.

Hey, you should know all that anyway shouldn't you? You a sound engineer type geeza!

BTW i thought mid-range was 300Hz to ~10KHz with tweeter doing the higher stuff

Yup, you're all absolutely right, bugger. I'd already sussed I'd need a pair, just didn't put that in my earlier post. But thanks for putting me right anyways

Oi must have been a little confused this morning, was a bit miffed to see what had happened Of course the range I need is 10hz to 10Khz or thereabouts, silly old me.

The Heretic: thanks for the offer but them old shipping costs don't make it really worthwhile. When I posted I was at home and I have only about four trade catalogues here, when I get into the office I'll check out a lot of other contacts and/or have a phone around.

I've taken the driver out, it has a huge magnet, so it must be quite a goodie. No manufacturer's ID, so it must have been made by Gale, not sure if they're even still going, but I think these speakers are at least ten years old.

So yup, I'm looking for a pair.

Thanks for all the replies folks

I don't know what makes you prefer but I would recommend you try the B&W DM602S2. These are nice sounding speakers. Superb bass reproduction, real good for the action movies (have the neighbours gone out yet? ) but subtle enough for music.

My setup consists of a pair of B&W DM602S2 doing front duty, a pair of B&W DM601S2 (baby brothers to the fronts) doing rear duty and a B&W CC6 for the centre.

Hey Tim, B & W have always been respected, they make damn good loudspeakers. I had a pair of B & W's before these Gales actually, can't remember the model number, but these Gales came along cheap, a mate of mine was upgrading, they sounded better than what I had, so I bought them and then sold the B & W's, making it so I only had to fork out a tenner difference if I remember right.

In their earlier days, B & W speakers were very inefficient, that's not necessarily a bad thing, it just meant you needed a big mother of an amp to drive 'em. But not any more.

If I was flush, I'd probably go for a pair of floor standing speakers now, as my Gales are mounted on wall brackets. There's a load of good bargains at www.richersounds.co.uk including, funnily enough, active sub-woofers

edit: thought I'd take a look at their site myself, and what's on the front page? a pair of Gales. So they must still be going! I have a little phoning to do. You see those little Ariston Monitors for fifteen quid? I've got the pair just rated above them with my computer, only cost £20.00 but they sound really great. Quite unbelievable for the money in fact

...a company I got stuff from years ago, Wilmslow Audio, and blow me they're still there

And sure enough they have replacement cones. I'm a bit indecisive 'cos for £18.00 less than the cost of the replacement cones, I could get a pair of loudspeakers brand new, my speakers' successors.

I'll probably go for the cones, cos my cabinets are black, not sure about that beech finish. What to do?
