Here's ya a good one to comment on......

Recently, it came up in discussion, and I was without an answer! Now, knowing me, that just wouldn't do, so I got to checking it out, and I havent seen to many "clear" answers....

Whats your opinion??

I like to take music and mix it into different sequences of tracks by different artists, and on some tunes I dress them up, because of imperfections, or adding a sound "template'. How much do I have to "change" a copyrighted recording, before I can share it freely with my friends on the internet, without fear of legal action?

Also, is my music from 20+ years ago STILL copyrighted?? If I cannot buy it in the stores anymore, SHOULDN'T I be allowed to share my copies with whomever wants a copy ??

As far as I know, and I don't have legal backup on this one, it's just my feeling, all music is still copyrighted until so many years after the composer's death. I think it's 30 years, but not sure.

I'm wondering what would happen though if an artist's estate, such as that of John Lennon owned by Yoko Ono, were to have any of it's music copyright questioned?

As for changing music, if any of the original track still remains - which it must do in the example outlined above - then it would become a 'sample' and royalty fees would be due.

in electronic music, its a weird setting. Certainly the music is copyrighted by the artist and producer. however it gets played in clubs and gigs but the dj doesn't have to pay royalties or any earnings to the artist to my knowledge. if it was put on a CD and marketed for sale, i think it would be a different story though.
