    mandy 9.2 ....should i bother?

i've got a perfectly stable redhat 9.1 installation which i use as a general workstation and part time server. i've just got the download edition of mandy 9.2 (3 cd) and i cant decide if it's worth dumping my happily chugging redsplat for this new distro

it would appear the download version is pretty crippled toys wise, with a bunch of software missing, and a whole raft of drivers not included. also, i really dont like mandrake's implementation of samba, and issues with my chosen hardware make it a pain to install.

    thoughts anyone ?

There's a lot of broken stuff in Mandrake 9.2. I wouldn't touch it with your 10 inch pole

yeah ... i like redsplat the best, certainly from a server POV .... Mandy is the prettiest and it does have some nice features, but samba sucks goats on that distro ... i always seem to have trouble getting it to authenticate properly, whereas redsplat just behaves...

c'mon peeps ..... voice your opinions ... i have a spare 40gig drive at a loose end here

edit : yup organG .. i had heard that. i guess i was just hoping that mandrake had gotten round to applying some spit behind the polish.....

I know very, very, little about Linux based OS's. I have Mandrake 9.1 installed on one of three partitions on one machine. It works, I can use it. So far, anyway, haven't hit a prob yet.

From all I've read about MD V9.2, it sucks. I have actually d/l the three ISO's, but I'm wary. Why risk messing up something that works OK?

Martz, why not just install to your spare HDD and make it multi bootable with whatever else is on there? At least then you could try it and uninstall if you don't like it.

Or give Slackware 9.1 a go, 2 CD's to download. I'm loving it so far.

rojo sombrero said that they will still provide updates untill april 2004, so myself I'd still use it for awhile longer.

When I finally get around to installing 9.2 it will be on a seperate hard drive, this way if it's as bad as it appears to be, I can just wipe that hard drive and plug in the one I'm using now.

In the mean time, do some mandrake 9.2 reviews reading, so far I have only found this one. Where are the others?
    http://www.linuxelectrons.com/static...31112135141721

    And check out this link.
    http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/errata.php3
"Some users have encountered problems installing or using the 9.2 release due to specific configuration situations that we did not have an opportunity to fully test. Please use the patches or recommendations included below for each scenario if it applies to you."

Which is probably the best face mandrake could put on the current situation.

As distros get bought and merged, suse, or stop supporting the desktop, rojo sombrero, I expect that Slackware will be the last distro standing when all the dust settles.

Or to put it another way, you have the smarts Martz, download Slackware, the oldest of the linux distros and learn how to use it.

Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!

yup james, i did, but i wanted to start a discussion that didn't directly involve darcy's tats, or stuffed animals

what i cant understand is how mandrake made such a futz of 9.2 ... they have a good track history for decent distro's (although i personally find them a little odd)... hey i suppose they can be forgiven especially when you cast your mind back to Windows ME, the ultimate in OS Nightmare's

I installed the download version 2 nights ago - just to see what the "mandy" experience was - it's coming off tonite. I could see any of the user friendly wizards that peeps had been saying that were so great about Mandy...

I started off on Suse and I have tried a few other, but always keep going back to it. I bought Suse 9 pro at the weekend - I really like the changes over 8.1 - samba works a treat and I got the whole lot talking to my windows domain - I likie very much, but will try out Red hat 9.1 now - I just like trying and fiddling...

Interesting points you raised - and I have a set of Mandrake 9.2 CDs here, my son is running 9.0. loves it, and me bugging him to upgrade... (maybe I shouldn't? Opinions?)

I notice some quirkyness in the samba client in his machine, he never got around to connecting to all the other MS boxes in the house.

Regarding Suse - I was glad to see the news about Novell buiyng them, andIBM investing in Novell.

I have installed very quickly, and not tested (for lack of time) Suse 8.5. And I used a Novell 4.1 server in the past that still brings back happy memories, stable, sweet machine.

So, maybe Novell is getting stronger? Some articles I read felt these were good news. ( and I hope they are right! ;-)

    Ciao,
    Roberto.

Yeah, I think Novell buying Suse is a good thing. From Aaxnet.com

Putting its money where its mouth is, Novell bought the second most successful Linux publisher outright for the bargain price of $210 million. SuSE will now operate as a subsidiary of Novell and take full advantage of Novell's worldwide sales, dealer and support network. Novell will take full advantage of SuSE's leading Linux products.

Industry commentary has been loud, and overwhelmingly positive, and has propelled Novell back into the technology headlines from which it has so long been absent. Hooray for Novell!

Novell also bought Ximian, a leading developer of desktop, messaging and .NET compatible products for Linux, including a leading replacement for Microsoft Exchange Server which supports Outlook clients.

With a well known name and a reputation for rock solid products, Novell is now positioned to go toe to toe with Microsoft in many markets, and that includes the desktop, because SuSE, unlike Red Hat, is a strong supporter of desktop Linux in the enterprise.

Further, IBM has promised to invest $50 Million in Novell as soon as the SuSE deal is complete, further solidifying its relationship with the combined company and its commitment to Linux.
It is harder and harder to make a case to a weary and dismayed population that the Western way of life as managed by the Anglosphere ought to be spread around the world at the point of a gun.
