    Mandrake pulled a Knoppix

I just recieved an email from Mandrake:

MandrakeMove : move with Internet, Office & Multimedia in your pocket!

As a result of listening to customer needs, MandrakeSoft has created
MandrakeMove -- a new product based on Mandrake Linux 9.2 that
provides a complete personal desktop operating system on a bootable
CD. Personal data and configuration settings may be stored on a
    dedicated USB Key.

Discover all details about MandrakeMove, screenshots and product sheet
    at:
    http://www.mandrakesoft.com/products/mandrakemove/

The MandrakeMove Download Edition (Beta as of December, 1st 2003) is
available on many FTP mirrors (Note: The Beta version does not support
    USB key features):

So now Mandrake is jumping on the "try it without installing it" approach to linux.

Nothing wrong with that at all, and I expect to see more of this in the future.

    Fastforward to the next sentence...

"PCLinuxOS 2K4 Preview 4 is a live Knoppix style cd based on Mandrake 9.2 that runs entirely from a bootable CD.

Data on the CD is uncompressed on the fly, allowing up to 2 GB worth of system and programs on one CD including a complete X server, KDE 3.1.4 and Gnome 2.4, and large packages like OpenOffice 1.1 final and Mozila 1.5 plus plugins. Since it runs solely off the CD, PCLinuxOS makes an excellent portable Linux demo or system rescue disk, but its completeness makes it a good general purpose desktop as well. PCLinuxOS should work on most modern computer hardware. Recommended memory to run is 256mb or more.

A lot of work has been done over the past 4 weeks but a lot of work still needs to be done."

I first tried out SUSE8.1 that way, about this time last year I think it was - I downloaded the demo single iso from the SUSE FTP site - the whole thing runs from the CD. You boot up onto the CD, all hardware detected by YAST2, everything works including all the software packages, office, web broswer etc, and when you have finished shut down and take out the CD. The whole thing runs in memory so make sure you have at least 128MB

It was brilliant, it allowed me to see a full working version without have to install - a most excellent introduction in my opinion.

    Fantastic deal!

If this doesn't make it as easy as you can get for trying out and using Linux of some flavor, I don't know what will.

I'm impressed with this direction for Linux distributions.

    Made my week!

I agree - tried it the same way, LiveEval 8.1. I was surprised also that it supported all the hardware in the system flawlessly, including offering OpenGL on the ATI video card, and getting a PCI sound card to work instantly.

Both of those needed tweaking and lots of work with another distribution in the same system. Suse is a good release.
