While no match for falcons, homing pigeons are being used by Nick Adreef to deliver digital photographs.
Mr. Andreef's company runs a tour of caves, which are spread across a 20km radius. By the time the tourists were bussed back from caving, they had no time to have the photos downloaded and printed.
The guides now Velcro the memory cards to the pigeons back, which then flies the card to the home base. The only snag is the kareara, native falcons, which have attacked and killed some of the birds. Once he found this out, he grounded the pigeons until the nesting time for the falcons is over, which will only be a few weeks.
