Choose one.
Yes, a Socket 754 system.
Yes, a Socket 939 system.
Yes, a Socket 940 / Opteron system.
Probably, but haven't decided which yet.
No, I adhere to the dark side.
No, just plain no.
What the hell is Athlon 64?
Choose one.
I'm pretty sure I will be getting one by next fall, just don't know which one.
There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.
I'm more than likely going to be building a new system this year based on the AMD 64, just haven't decided which chip yet. My XP 1800+ be getting a little old![]()
Im in!! I have to save up for it, but bitbendette made me a deal. I stripped down my home linux box, and made a new system for my BIL, and nephew/niece, and I get to build a rock hauler in the spring, once we pay for xmas![]()
![]()
I said 939, but I'm not really commited to a specific socket selection yet, and cost will play a factor, too![]()
I'm hoping to be able to afford a 939 version but I'll have to wait and see come the summer, my 1700+@2.3Ghz is good enough atm and I'm getting a 9700Pro very soon, so there's no real point in upgrading yet.
Hell No!
Well not this year, I don't think. Don't need it yet, that's for sure.
Spring has sprung. If I'm not here, I'm gone golfing, camping, golfing, fishing, etc.Disregard; I'm back.....Again!
I'm building one more system this year, but it won't be an Athlon 64. Maybe when they come out with BTX compatible motherboards, then I might use that chip series . . .
It is harder and harder to make a case to a weary and dismayed population that the Western way of life as managed by the Anglosphere ought to be spread around the world at the point of a gun.

Not sure which one yet, but if it's not delayed too much, I would really like a socket 939.
I'm thinking probably a Socket 939, however the Socket 754 systems seem to have been given a strong show of support by AMD.
If they continue to put out stronger and stronger CPUs for that platform AND the 939 is priced out of reach and/or pushes the cost of CPUs for the 754 way down, then maybe I'll go that way.
I'm waiting for the market to shake itself out as I want a Dual Opteron system. A64 isn't in the picture.
I'm with DS on this one. would rather have a dual Opteron. Its a matter of juglling this hobby with my woodworking. That and it would appear that it is going to be a very lean year this year at work. We lost several major accounts that I was the engineer on representing about $3500-4500.
As for the 64, I would love to have one but cant justify it right now.
What we do in Life, Echoes through eternity.
Socket 939 - hopefully in May - my video editing box feels sluggish now and - could do with a boost![]()
Short answer is no - too expensive for me atm.
Hell, I can't even afford an XP3200
One day, one day....
I will once the prices have dropped & and socket situation has been sorted out. Dont want to get caught out in a P4 socket situation like a lot of peeps did.

Ahhh, walked in the store today, and there's 2 MSI K8T Master 2 motherboards sitting here - one was bought by an attorney who wants to play around. Dual socket 940 chips . . .
Some people just have too much money![]()
I gotta do a build this year!
Gotta itch I can't scratch and won't go away until I do build a new PC.![]()

As soon as i get a decent job and pay off my debts, i may well just build a kick as 64 System, although i'm tempted to keep what i have now until its not powerfull enough. I can then concentrate on making my current system quiet and building a full on AD network at home. I'd also like to get a lappy one day and possibly a Palmtop.
hmmm
I don't think I will build one until the "second" generation comes out... I learn't my leason the hardway with my KT7-Raid board...
(which BTW i looking like its going to get refurbished and set up as a Linux router... red hat probaly)
I agree with slohand.... the urge is hard to resist...
I will probably be building a new system by the begining of next year and then AMD 64 is very tempting, if Appel dosen't come up with another G5 (Ya raight man)

I might at the end of summer break.

We Alaskan's get our Permanent Fund Dividends in October. Should be somewhere between $1200 and $1500. I plan to spend mine on a new processer/MB/Memory. Don't know what yet.
Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting...Holy Sh!t - What a ride!

Just out of interest, I was thinking of upgrading what I have.
Current system:
MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR
XP2600 CPU
Thermalright SLK 800 w/Pabst lo-noise 80mm fan
2 x 256Mb Corsair PC2700
1 x Western Digital 80Gb 8mb cache PATA
1 x Western Digital 60Gb 2mb cache PATA
Hercules Radeon 8500 128Mb
To make this one kick-ass machine:
XP3200 CPU
2 x 512Mb PC3200 (Crucial or Twinmos)
Crucial 9800 Pro 128Mb Video card
2 x Western Digital SATA Raptor 36.7Gb drives, running in RAID 0
That lot comes to £682.00, inc. VAT + shipping.
I'd keep the 80Gb IDE drive as storage on an IDE port, and I could easily sell the Corsair memory, 60Gb HDD, CPU & 8500 Video card for about £160.00 so that makes total outlay of around £520.00 for a fairly fast machine.
Compare that to the cost of going 64 bit, figure it should stand me in good stead for at least a year, maybe longer, and that's why I'm not ready to take the plunge yet.
Hell, I may just go ahead and do this thing, that damn credit card is winking at me![]()
until 64-bit software comes out to take advantage of these chips fully, i am fine going along with may 2.4G Barton!
of course i say this and by fall i will have an A64 hehe

Well, I said no. would like to but too poor right now. But even if I had the dough, I'd probably not, since I got more pc stuff than I really need. For what I do on a pc I'd probably not benefit by anything faster/powerful.
That's the adult common sense talking.. cuz if I 'really' had the dough it would be blown on all the newest goodies.![]()
After all we now have quad cores!
As I was, so I remain until he returns.![]()
The poll has been closed for over 3 years now![]()
NECROMANCY!
Power is something that should be given to those who need it to serve and withheld from those who seek it to rule.
I think I'll buy a 754 because it's obviously a superior platform to the 939.
Hang on, where's my calendar?........
I bought an Athlon 64x2 this year. I have no idea what socket it is. I don't know if it takes the small base or the standard base bulbs.![]()
I'm still shopping around trying to find one of them there rocks DA has.. From what he says, they run cool and are darn near indestructible. LoL!!!
Only problem is I don't know what kinda tubes to keep on hand for spare parts...
![]()
No tubes ... solid silicon dioxide baby!![]()
Why is this poll even still on the front page?![]()
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L / Intel Q6600 / EVGA GTX 280 / HT Omega Claro+ / 4GB G.Skill PC2 8500 / Corsair 1000W PSU / Lite-On LightScribe DVD Burner / Lite-On DVD-ROM / Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB / Seagate Barracuda 500GB / LG FLATRON IPS235
I'd say it's holding place till a better one comes along.
