Nice article, I've been using 3 rounded cables for about 9 months now and no problems. Both my ATA100 cables are 18" and the floppy is 24". What's funny is that my HD benchmarks went up when I switched to the rounded cables, perhaps overall they are a better quality than what I had.

Fortunately, there's two sides to round ribbon. Like the articles said, IDE cables are exposed to constant EMP waves (or radio frequency or something like that), by adding an extra layer of protection in round ribbons, it can actually elevated the quality. Unfortunately, people sometimes make the cable too long, thus killing the signal. Well, you know I'll be getting the short 12" rounds when I get my imaginary Lian-Li PC68.

Im using 24" streamline rounded cables from frozencpu.com...I wonder if thats why my hard drive went bad on me...and now doesnt work.

Hey Miller, most likely your IBM HD didn't go bad because of the cables. Cables merely carry data signals to and from the HD and would not be causing the "clicking" noise you heard in your IBM. That is more a result of a physical reliability failure on part of IBM which has happened to other people as well.

Mine are 18", and are just screaming along. matter of fact, the forum server is runn them exclusively, for ALL devices.

i don't know i have all my ide wires folded and zip tied, i don't know though if i am losing performance from it since i haven't tested the speed, i am thinking now of bucking up the cash and going for one of those wires with the braided housing, if i am losing out , but i don't know, lurch

Dooks...I wouldn't worry about the distance between 2 and 3....it's negligible. I would try to keep your cables under 24" though and preferably 18"...if you read that rounded cable article I linked in this thread it will give you all the 411 on it.

Typically, if I recall, "3" is usually the secondary IDE and "2" is the primary IDE so put it in "2". Its been awhile since I used single device cables now...but someone chime in if I am wrong please

3 is master and 2 is slave

Dook, if you have only one drive put it on 3 (master) on the primary IDE connector on your board.

The way I understand it, any IDE cable over 24' and you get signal degradation. Dook, have a look here http://www.storagereview.com/welcome...Jumpering.html and read the 5th paragraph, that should answer your question about using the middle connector on the cable

Here's one I made of the ATA100 that came with the mobo. Works very well, and much more flexible than round cables as I will show you in the next shot. Mean while...

As you can see I've tugged the ATA100 behind the HD cage to get it out of the way of incoming currents. The cross channel long cable you see diagonally is the SCSI cable, which I also rounded, to connect the two SCSI ROMs to the controller, with audio cables entwining its length.

thats a pretty sexy case inside there

, so is putting heat sinks on the mobo die worthwhile, i have another one of those exact heat sinks laying around , so i could slap it on there, just wondering.

cph21, if your scared if cutting the wires you can always fold them and zip tie em, makes them take up much less space like cutting but i have felt ones the way stoner did em and they are much much easier to handle, folding them makes them very sturdy so they can be a pain to manipulate sometimes, but its the quick and easy way of doing it, once i go zero credit card debt, soon , oh yes, soon, i'm going to buck up the cash and spring for some nice cables, even though i swore i'd never do it, but who knows a quality cable may let my harddrives take the higher fsb w/out going crazy , well see ya, lurch

looks like my beastie 1metere cable will get relagated to handling my DVD and my ZIP drive I guess. So it looks like nother shopping trip for yet another ATA66 cable so I can get my HDDs back up o speed

nice work on the cables very neat, i think ill try that way instead of cutting then one by one. I like the fold method better. It seems safer then stripping one wire at a time.
