    Port Probing Fun...

(quit it with the sick jokes)

    https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

Okay folks, here's a utility y'all will like, especially those with DSL. I'm not sure if you're ISP has told you how good their hardware firewall is, but try shutting ZoneAlarm off and give this utility a whirl, I certainly hope y'all be surprise. And repeat with ZoneAlarm on. Hmmm... I also like to see if anyone's Linksys Router's doing its job. Here's mine with ZoneAlarm Pro on. Bear with me now, it's kinda big.

a good toy to try out is "Advanced Administration Tools"....... just turn it on your external IP and prepare to have the shit scared out of you

can also be used to test the security of your mail server if you got one at home........

Hey DB, you mean you can't get it to work on your PC. Surely you have been around PC's long enought to know that a blanket statement like can't be substantiated on the basis of it not working on just your PC.

AAT works just fine on mine.

What do you mean, you don't know your IP? Give us more info, and maybe we can help.

OK, that's fine. However, it would still be advisable for you to get a software firwall. Zone Alarm is totally free, dead easy to install and configure, and it's used by many , many dial-up users.

I guess you spend 2-3 hours on line a day, maybe more, and at say an hour a time, well, that's plenty long enough for you to be scanned and connections attempted.

    ohhh Danball1976! lookee here...

I'm on dial up and I'm using a software firewall. I only started using one a month or two ago and since then I've seen via that firewall what's going on, it's scared the shit outta me!

I've suffered two viruses in the last 8 months or so, I'm sure a firewall could have prevented that. And the next recommendation doesn't cost a bean.

Go to the main page of this Forum. Then: Software Palace/Downloads factory/Bitbender Forums Recommended Software Links (8th one down) Zone Alarm. It's the sticky at the top of the thread.

I strongly recommend you download the proggie and use it. It's good. Again, may I remind you it's free.

DragonAce pointed me in the right direction, AmStoned is currently extolling it's virtues on another thread - go for it!

I love free stuff. Hell all my stuff are free... wait, I mean I bought them all with my hard earn money. If they don't work you damn sure I'm going to bitch about it to the vendor, ie, "Damn you Ian, my Panaflo Lows are not working, you trying to 'Skamp' me?"

BlackIce is okay, but I know MD likes it very much even though it's not free. ZoneAlarm is the bomb on virus terrorism. Get it!

...Now if only I can get AATools for free...:dev:

Update: Okay, WTF does AATools do anyway? Would someone PLEASE tell me what this $40 POS does that will impress me. Thanks a bunch.

DB, I'm also on dial-up, the guys pointed Zone Alarm out to me a couple of weeks ago and I dl'd and installed. I'm on probably 4 hrs a day total and get 2-3 scans every hour, on a Sat or Sun when the net is real busy, I've gotten as many as a dozen in 1 hour. The program is free with no time limits, so why not? I have never had a virus get through Norton but another line of defense can't hurt.

oh stoner, in your origonal post you asked how lynksis hardware firewalls did, well all of them were closed except for netbios which is stealth, not bad i guess, not as happy as the program you have but a step up, since my entire house is running no anti-virus programs, (they were just too stifling) and i didn't ask anyone when i took them off, i just put the mobo in security mode and try to ghost everything once in a while, btw, i think i'll do that soon, uh i have damned myself, once you say that, thats when they crash, oh well, later,

db, if you got a free day or so i could email you black ice, i believe its 200meg, which at 5kb/sec is 11.1 hours, but its free, the upload for me wont take that long, so i don't care, let me know, lurch

DB, check your PM, got you a copy of BlackICE 2.5. I picked it up from Lurch's truck when he hit a bump on my front lawn. Thank Lurch and enjoy.

OMG, I can't believe our resident super cheap ass actually spent close to $100 for a piece of hardware which it's functions can be replicated by free software. Sucka

Okay, seriously, the router is great for sharing DSL, especially if you share a house with a bunch of cheap ass roomies who always pay their rent 4 days late. You know I actually charged the suckas for internet access a while back. But since I'm broke and have to switch back to free dial-up from school, they have to get their own line.

    Yeah Yeah Yeah

The thing about software firewall is that it's just that...meaning its software which makes it prone to Viruses...not that I have seen any viruses specifically written for it yet. But you gotta think some zit-faced kid who has no date on friday and hasn't shaved his palms yet is brewing one up

Hardware firewall for me baby (especially when the roommate pays for it)

Damn mango growing hackers. Hmm... Asian region huh? Don't believe I've ever saw those? I get a lot of local probes, mostly from people using the school line. Now how stupid is that? I know your IP, you can easily report your ass to the help desk, or I could hack your ass back. Loosers.

Wow, busy port you got there. Hmmm... I usually don't get that many probes with ZoneAlarm, might just install BlackICE tonight in conjunction with ZoneAlarm and see what's going on.

    The Stoner:

I read two different reports on Black Ice in two UK Computer mags. Both reviewers concluded that whilst it was a good programme, it was a tad 'over-sensitive' and that something like 30% of it's alerts were groundless.

All the reports I've read on Zone Alarm, both the free version and the Pro version (which I'm using ) have been favourable. The only criticism of ZA was that it was a touch simplistic for admins who would perhaps need more detailed options than offered.

And as for cliffs, as I'm playing Giants atm, I got me's a jet-pack, so they no bother me....

Flopps: Hmm... Good info on the BI Vs. ZA. Maybe I'll just install the sucker on my friend's system and see how it works out.

BTW, your avator reminds me of soldiers in XCOM 3. Exact same outfit with the jetpack, BFG, and mirror (?) for checking around the corners.

I'll tell ya something - the more I learn, the more I realise how much I don't know

I've got Mandrake 8 installed on this system. Now, I'm told that's a really easy version to use, nice ugi and all, but I ain't gone near it in at least 6 weeks, was too damn frustrating to try and figure out. I suppose I could print the manual out, but I've read some of it within that OS, and it seems to me they assume some prior knowledge. I wish somebody would write a book entitled 'The totally dumb-asses guide to starting off in Linux'. I have a couple of books, but I dunno, maybe I'm stoopid. Or impatient, maybe?

AS: My Avatar is a Character from 'Giants - Citizen Kabuto'. Looks like the makers took some inspiration from X-Com eh?

He's a 'Mechanoid' or something, called Baz or Tel. This geezer has a quite believable and really funny Brit accent. Makes me laugh.

Hmmm... Doesn't look too serious. Mostly scan. Should watch out for the Red alerts. I believe those are Trojan horse implents. Wow, somebody's obsessed with your system. 10 Probes by the same IP? Most likely some website cookies or ads. You are in good hand DB.

I've always liked PC Conseal for my firewall. Does a great job, reports every attack, although it's report isnt the easiest to decifer at times. I like the reporting of Black Ice from screenshots I've seen. Considerin runnin both. Conseal for protection, Black Ice for reporting.
