    real player for linux

wanted to install realplayer 10 for linux(i want to watch news clips from the bbc and cnn) ,the instructions seem pretty straight forward:

    - Ensure that the .bin file you downloaded is executable. You can make the .bin file executable by running the "chmod a+x RealPlayer10GOLD.bin" command from a terminal window.

    - Run the .bin file by typing "./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin". Follow the prompts provided to finish installing the player.

    - When you launch the player for the first time, a set-up assistant will take you through configuring your player.

i plan on doing all this in my home directory. The thing is should i do it as root ,or is doing it as User good enough.

and it doesn't really mention what command i would have to use to launch it the first time, i'm assuming that i have to open a terminal, change into the directory that the Bin is in (my home directory)and type ./realplayer

I don't trust realplayer but did install it a few weeks back. Yes, you have to chmod the file to make it executionable. I installed it as "root" and it is installed in my /usr/local/ directory so I can't help you on the "user" intallation.

I think one can just place the codec in xine and use that but haven't done it myself yet. Kinda like the Real interface.

decided to install it as root like you did Cool(wasn't sure where i was going to put it as root, but /usr/local is as good as anyplace i guess),and it's working fine...have to admit real player was one of my least favorite media players when i used windows..still not sure i like it.

But have to give them credit for at least acknowledging linux as an alternative, unlike apple who still seem to have their collective heads up their asses...

    Thanks for the help Cool

Real player is much better than what everyone is used to in windows. Linux uses the open source (Helix) code, so you will not get the nastys that windows users are used to.

I installed it, and it's even listed in firefox about:plugins enjoy.

That's great news Bobguy...was wondering if any of the nasty's from the windows version carried over to the linux version...

one thing i've noticed so far is that the quality of the streams is better than i remember in windows...much better actually.

only thing know is that when i installed it i specified /usr/local ,and sure enough it installed to /usr/local...thing is i don't know if there was anything else in that directory...so if i have to uninstall or upgrade i'm not really sure what to delete and what to leave alone DOH!

i'm certain there is a way to figure it out

First realplayer version upgrades arn't released very often, so you will probably have a newer version of linux by that time.

Second there is a install.log listing everything the installer did, where it put files etc.

Thrid realplayer creates the realplayer directory, makes it a handy place to put realplayer code.

    Look in the /usr/local/realplayer directory.

Basically as long as it works, I wouldn't worry about it.

    Try $ cd /usr/local/realplayer then $ less install.log

Good point Bob ,will probably have slackware 10.1 by then....

checked the install log,and yep it tells me everything that was installed..

as far as realplayer creating it's own directory in /usr/local,nope didn't happen on my setup .It's all there but not in it's own directory, although i used the Bin method of installation.I know there are RPM's availabe for it(not sure if this was the way you did it Bob),but would explain the difference.

yes it works great so i will take your advice and enjoy it

    Thanks Bobguy

Ouch! That's messy. I used the tarball and everything is in it's own directory. I do not recall if'n I created the directory, the install asked to create a directory or the install just created it on it's own. Must have been one of the first two, seeing as how you have everything dumped in /usr/local/. Cannot tell from the install.log.

    Code:
    RealPlayer 1.0.1.436 installation log Mon Nov 29 08:06:17 2004
    files extracted to /usr/local/RealPlayer:

yep...messy indeed Cool....no biggie though it's like Bobguy said odds are i'll be playing with another version of slackware before i want to upgrade the realplayer. And if by an outside chance i want to remove(unlikely i'm really liking the way it's working) or upgrade it.I can just follow the install log and remove what's listed there.I'm just looking at it as good practice for manually uninstalling something

I found the RealPlayer10GOLD.bin rather unintutive, a few more clues during the install wouldn't hurt.

I installed mine in /usr/bin, actually /usr/local/bin would have been a better choice.

Realplayer creates its own directory during the install, oddly enough they call it realplay, imagine that.

From what it looks like, everything realplayer is stuffed into this directory. So by just removing this directory, realplayer will be history.

The directory and the player are both named realplay, which is most likely a carry over from the brain dead dos days with it's 8.3 naming convention. Otherwise they could of named one of these realplayer.

I'm starting to like this player, it's good!

its reminds me too much of the RealOne player in Windows. But then again, I am not one to condone to change too easily, I still use RealJukebox2.0 for my MP3 player...

I like XMMS or Juk better for MP3s on Linux, and mplayer for video.
