The previous thread here was getting a little long in the tooth so here’s the new, revamped BBF free software links page.

The only criteria for a piece of software appearing here is that it’s free and useful.

If you want to recommend some free software then post elsewhere in this forum section and we’ll add it to this thread.

As so many here are now using Linux, I’ll start a separate post within this thread for Linux applications. Please feel free to recommend good software packages for Linux Distros.

Avast An anti-virus program.

Malwarebytes Malwarebytes has developed a variety of tools that can identify and remove malicious software from your computer. When your computer becomes infected, Malwarebytes can provide the needed assistance to remove the infection and restore the machine back to optimum performance.

Video Drivers

Omega Drivers Optimised and re-written drivers the author claims improve gaming. For Nvidia & ATI cards.

Tools

Memtest Tests motherboard memory. Download program or ISO then boot from floppy or CD.

Ultimate Boot CD Consolidates as many diagnostic tools as possible into one bootable CD.

Speedfan Monitors temperatures, voltages and fan speeds.

Motherboard Monitor Monitors temperatures, voltages and fan speeds. Last version made in 2004, suitable for older motherboards.

Bootdisk Download bootdisks. Including the one you need to have to flash a Bios.

Prime 95 A CPU Stress test, ideal for checking if your overclock is stable.

Intel Burn Test Tool that helps Intel Core 2-based (or others) test for system stability in a relatively short time (greatly shorter than Prime95). The program utilizes Intel's very own CPU stress testing binaries for the most stressful, and speedy testing.

SysInternal Lots of freeware programs, too many to list here, under categories: File & Disk; Security; Networking; Processes & Threads; System Information; Miscellaneous.

As of July 18th 2006 Sysinternals has been bought out by Microsoft. This means it's likely that in the near future their freeware may no longer be freeware, so grab 'em while you can.

Printscreen A screen capture facility.

Screen Hunter A screen capture facility (note only the lite version is free).

Irfanview A graphics editor package.

The Gimp A graphics editor package. Similar to Photoshop.

Anti Spam

Mailwasher Stops Spam. Bounces unwanted e-mails straight back before it's even left the sender's server. Free version works with only one e-mail account.

Office utilities

Open Office An office suite similar to and compatible with MS Office.

Foxit A free PDF reader that's only 2.1Mb as opposed to Adobe's Acrobat Reader which is around 20Mb. No annoying prompts or pop-ups either.

Video utilities

DVD Shrink Enables you to back up your commercially purchased DVD's. DVD Shrink Tutorials

DVD Fab Decrypter DVD Movie backup software. Removes coding. The link for the free version is at the bottom of the page in very small print marked 'Free Stuff'. The two paid versions offer more facilities

Audio utilities

Audacity An audio editing facility.

CDex Convert between audio formats, WAV, mp3 etc.

Exact Audio Copy As it says. For most exact copy of audio. Copying can be a lengthy process, but accurate.

Winamp A media player with the emphasis on audio playback. Thousands of skins available.
